Softball Captures Program’s 17th CCIW Tournament Title

Khoury sets career homerun record, Titans set win streak record

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The 22nd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University softball team broke the program's longest win streak record as the Titans claimed the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Saturday afternoon, May 10, at Inspiration Field. IWU won its 22nd straight game, besting second-seeded Augustana College, 4-2, to break the record which was set in 2014, to jump to 34-7 on the season and earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.

Senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) put the Titans on top with one swing of the bat. Coming off a two homer game one day prior, Khoury cranked a solo shot to left for her eighth roundtripper of the season. With the homerun, Khoury broke the program's career record as it marked the 34th in her illustrious career.

Augustana answered with a run in the top of the third, but Illinois Wesleyan punched right back. Freshman Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) drew a leadoff hit by pitch and junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) and senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) followed with walks to load the bases for Khoury. Stepping to the dish with a hot bat, Khoury laced a two-run single to catapult the Titans ahead, 3-1.

A pair of singles put runners on the corners for the Vikings with one out in the fourth. A wild pitch allowed Augie to score one, but sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) escaped the jam with a lineout to Hermes at second.

Leading 3-2 into the fifth, the Green and White utilized smart baserunning to manufacture a key insurance run. Freshman Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) reached on an error and was bunted over to second by fellow freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy). Kuhn singled to put runners on the corners and promptly worked her way into a throw down, which gave the speedy Wilkens plenty of time to slide home safely to extend IWU's lead to two, 4-2.

Holland allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings before junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) scooped up a grounder and fired to Khoury for the game's final out.

Proving once more how deserving she was of the CCIW Pitcher of the Year award, Holland was masterful in the circle. The sophomore held a potent Viking offense to five hits, allowing just two runs over a complete game effort. Holland ran her record to 8-1 on year with the victory.

Illinois Wesleyan produced just four hits in the game, with Augie notching five, but Khoury's 2-for-2 outing was enough to lift the Titans to the win. Khoury drove in three runs, while Kuhn accounted for IWU's other two base knocks.

The Titans will await Monday's NCAA Selection Show as the 64-team field is unveiled on ncaa.com at 11 a.m. ET.
