Baseball Splits With DePauw on Senior Day

Game time at 6 p.m. Tuesday

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After senior day festivities, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team split in a doubleheader against DePauw University Saturday, April 26. IWU took the first game shutting out the Tigers, 3-0, but DU took the win in game two, scoring 11 runs to the Titans three. After today, the Green and White is 21-13 overall while DePauw sits at 11-24.

Game One: Titans 3, Tigers 0

Senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.–Buffalo Grove) led the Titans' offense with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, adding an RBI to cap off an impressive outing. Fellow senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.–St. Laurence) also delivered, going 2-for-4 and scoring twice.

On the mound, junior Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.–Beardstown) was dominant through seven innings, striking out seven and earning the win. Junior Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.–Downers Grove South) came in for relief and secured the save to preserve the shutout.

The Titans opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Gurgone started the rally with a single to left, then advanced to third on a hit by Figus. Junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.–Bloomington) followed with a clutch single through the right side to bring Gurgone home and give IWU a 1-0 lead.

DePauw threatened in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Davidsmeier shut the door with a crucial strikeout to escape the jam.

IWU added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.–Pittsfield) reached on a fielder's choice, and Gurgone moved him to third with another single. Senior Casey Swanson (Minooka, Ill.–Minooka) delivered an RBI single to the left side, scoring Tomhave. Moments later, Figus drove in Gurgone with another single to make it 3-0.

That score held through the final innings, as the Titans secured a strong shutout victory.

Game Two: Titans 3, Tigers 11

Freshman Cole Benson (Oak Park, Ill.–Oak Park River Forest) made the start on the mound for the Titans in game two, tossing four innings and striking out two. Benson was credited with the decision. The bullpen saw action from seniors Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.–Sherrard) and Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.–Downers Grove South), along with sophomore Marshall Ingold (Rochester, Ill.–Rochester) and junior Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.–Oak Park River Forest).

At the plate, senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.–Schaumburg) had a solid performance, going 2-for-4 with a double. Freshman Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.–Lincoln-Way East) continued to contribute offensively, driving in two runs.

The Titans struck early in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on erratic pitching to draw four walks and bring in the first run via sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.–Oak Park River Forest). Hudik followed with a clutch single, scoring Luca Morelli (Lincolnshire, Ill.–Adlai E. Stevenson) and Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.–Oak Park River Forest) to give IWU a quick 3-0 lead.

DePauw responded with two runs in the top of the third to narrow the gap, then surged ahead in the fourth with three more runs to take a 5-3 lead. The Tigers continued to pile on with four runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth, building an 11-3 advantage that held through the final innings.

The Titans continue non-conference action, Tuesday April 29 against Blackburn College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Jack Horenberger Field.
