Baseball Holds Off Big Blue in Midweek Matchup

IWU looks ahead to Wednesday game at Eastern Illinois

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team rode an early lead to a 3-2 win over Millikin University Tuesday night, April 22, at Horenberger Field. With the win, IWU boosted its record to 20-12 overall and 12-4 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin games, while Millikin dipped to 15-18 (5-9 CCIW).

Senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first and senior Cade Tomhave's (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) single put runners on the corners. With two in scoring position after Tomhave swiped second, senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) came through with some situational hitting. Driving a pitch to right field, Gurgone's sacrifice fly brought home Gadomski for a 1-0 Titan lead after just one inning,

Junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) singled to right center to prompt a MU pitching change in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) welcomed the new pitcher with a deep centerfield double advancing Wolfe to third with senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) up to bat. Woltman brought Wolfe home on a sacrifice fly to right and put Flagg on third just in time for Hudik's sacrifice fly to center to bring him across the plate to move ahead 3-0.

Millikin used a trio of hits to have bases loaded with no outs in the sixth, but a clutch effort for IWU saw Gadomski, Wolfe, and Tomhave turn a double-play, allowing only one run before the inning ended on a Big Blue fly-out to left.

MU brought it back within one in the top of the ninth with a two-out solo home run, but it did little to overpower the Titans as junior Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) struck out the next batter to finish out the 3-2 win for Illinois Wesleyan.

Wolfe went 2-for-2 with two hits and a run, while Woltman, Hudik, and senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) each had one RBI on the day. Flagg had the Titans only multiple-bag hit with a double while going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) got the start on the mound for IWU, throwing for six innings and striking out seven to be credited with his fifth win of the season. Costello picked up the save out of the bullpen, throwing for three innings and striking out three.

Illinois Wesleyan turns its attention to a non-conference game on the road against Eastern Illinois University Wednesday, April 23. Game time at Coaches Stadium in Charleston, Ill. is set for a 3 p.m. start.
