Men’s Volleyball Downed by Duhawks

Titans look ahead to Senior Day Saturday, April 5

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Finally making the trip to Dubuque, Iowa, to take on No. 11 Loras College, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-13, 25-15, 25-13) to the Duhawks Wednesday night, April 2. The loss drops the Titans to 12-11 overall, and 2-7 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while Loras improves 16-4 and 7-2 in league play.

The Green and White never found its rhythm, only recording 20 kills on a sub-zero clip, while the Duhawks hit a scorching .446 with 37 kills. Loras also held the edge in assists (33-19), digs (24-18), and blocks (12-3). IWU notched three aces to LC's two in the match.

Sophomore Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) led the team with five kills and a pair of aces in the contest. The trio of senior Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson), freshman Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist), and sophomore Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) each finished with three kills.

Senior Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) notched a team-leading 10 assists. Myers, Williams, Reutter, and freshman Ben Zima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) each posted a team-best three digs. IWU's three blocks in the game came on solo stuffs from three different players.

Reutter fed senior Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) for a kill to get the Green and White on the board, and Myers buried a ball sent over prematurely to tie the score early in the first set, 2-2. After Loras took the next two points, a service error sparked a mini run for the Titans. Myers notched his second kill early, this time downing a set from Reutter, to follow a Duhawks attack error, giving IWU its first lead early, 5-4.

DiCosola found Reutter for a kill to bring the Titans within three, 12-9, but Loras went on a six-point run to take full control of the first set, going on to win it 25-13.

After Loras won the first three points in the second set, Williams and Kuziela notched back-to-back kills to bring the score within one, 3-2. The Duhakws responded with five straight points, calling for an early IWU timeout. The break briefly worked for the Titans, as Loras had a service error to cut the score to 8-4 in favor of the home team. Illinois Wesleyan would never pull the set any closer, falling 25-15.

The Duhawks opened the third set on a 7-1 run, forcing head coach Brandon Mueller to use one of his timeouts. IWU was not done fighting, as DiCosola found Williams later for a kill to begin a 5-2 run for the Green and White. After a LC sideout, Kuziela fed fellow freshman Trey Marek (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) for a kill, followed by a solo stuff from freshman Lane Sunley (Flossmoor, Ill.-Homewood Flossmoor). After a point from the Duhawks followed an attack error, Marek got a solo block of his own to bring the set within five, 12-7.

IWU could never get the set any closer, ultimately falling 25-13.

The Titans will host the Duhawks to close out the regular season at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 5. IWU will begin the match by celebrating Senior Day, honoring seniors Ryan Myers, Vince DiCosola, Luke Hartke, and Jake Kougan, prior to the start of their last game inside Shirk Center.
