League Play Rolls On in Decatur for Softball

Titans to play Millikin, April 15

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin slate rolls on as the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team travels to Decatur, Ill. for a twin bill at Millikin University Tuesday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Workman Family Softball Field.

The Titans enter the tilts off their CCIW opener, April 12, that saw the Green and White sweep North Park on the road. IWU won the opener 9-0 in five innings and then no-hit NPU, 2-0, to complete the sweep. Illinois Wesleyan stands at 17-7 on the season, 2-0 in the CCIW, after the wins. Millikin also heads into Tuesday following a league sweep, as the Big Blue bested Wheaton, April 12. MU is 16-10 overall and 4-2 in league action following its 10-2 and 9-1 wins over the Thunder.

Seniors Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) and Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) lead the Titans offensively both by average and run production. Kuhn is hitting a team-high .476 on the season with team-highs of 39 hits, 10 doubles, 14 runs scored, and 30 RBIs. Khoury holds a .361 batting average with 23 RBIs. Freshman Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett), junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy), and junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) also check in with averages above .300 as regular starters for the Green and White. Post is the team leader with four homers, while Pinter's 11 walks lead the team.

In the circle, Illinois Wesleyan features one of the deepest staffs in the CCIW and possibly the nation. Four different Titans have picked up wins in the circle, while the depth has also made way for five saves on the year. Junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) carries a 9-2 record following a one-hit shutout of North Park, April 12, and has logged a team-high 63 innings. She also leads the team with 41 strikeouts, six complete games, two shutouts, and three saves. Sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) tops the staff with a 1.57 earned run average and is second on the team with two saves. Freshman Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) ranks second in wins with a 4-2 record. She has thrown 42 innings, fanning 38.

Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin have a wealth of history, having met on the diamond 75 times ahead of Tuesday's twin bill. IWU holds a 51-24 edge in the series all-time, but the Titans are just 10-8 against the Big Blue over the last 18 meetings. Last season, the two split a doubleheader in Bloomington before the Green and White topped Millikin twice in the CCIW Tournament.

Tuesday's action at the Workman Family Softball Field will get underway with a 4 p.m. first pitch. Links to the live stream and live stats of the games can be found on the softball schedule page of iwusports.com.
