Baseball Splits at Augie

Rubber match set for tomorrow, April 13, at Horenberger Field

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team won the first and dropped the second of a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Augustana College Saturday, April 12. The Titans (14-12, 6-4 CCIW) came from behind to win the first game, 8-5, but were overpowered by the Vikings (14-11, 4-4 CCIW), 17-4, in game two.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 8, Augustana 5
Augie took a 1-0 lead in the first before piling on four in the third to go ahead, 5-1, into the fourth.

Illinois Wesleyan got a run back in the fourth, as junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) singled to center with two away. Freshman Matthew Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) singled to the left-center gap moments later to drive home Flagg and pull IWU within three, 5-2.

The Titans plated two more in the fifth with a pair of RBI knocks. Senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) singled to left and swiped second before coming around to cross the plate on senior Tristan Figus' (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) RBI single. Junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) added a run-scoring single to left to cut the Augustana lead to one, 5-4.

After an error leveled the score at five all, Illinois Wesleyan took its first lead of the day in the seventh. Wolfe doubled with two outs, and Flagg capitalized on an RBI opportunity with a single to center, pushing IWU ahead 6-5.

The Green and White plated a pair of insurance runs late to up its lead to three, 8-5. Senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) notched a run-scoring single and later scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth to give IWU a bit of a cushion.

Freshman Cade Addis (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) earned the call in the ninth and worked around two base runners to close out the win. His ninth-inning performance earned him a save, the first of his career.

Freshman Brennan Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) grabbed the win, moving to 2-0 on the year, after tossing 2.2 innings in relief. Tomhave fanned two and limited Augie to two hits in relief of Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown), who started the game and fanned eight.

Offensively, Illinois Wesleyan accrued 13 hits to Augustana's nine. Four Titans went 2-for-4 in the game, with Hudik, Figus, Wolfe, and Flagg pacing the offense. Figus and Flagg each scored two runs, while five different Titans were credited with RBIs.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 4, Augustana 17
The Titans plated a run in the top of the first off senior Justin Gadomski's (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) RBI single, but the Vikings pounced for seven runs in the bottom of half of the inning to seize control, 7-1.

Augustana tacked on six in the fourth and put together a four-run fifth to take down IWU, 17-4.

The Green and White finished with eight hits to Augie's 11 in the game. Eight different Titans recorded hits in the loss, with freshman Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) going 1-for-1 with a team-best two driven in.

Freshman Michael Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) was dealt the loss, as he started on the bump for Illinois Wesleyan. Freshman Jack Wisdom (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) threw a hitless sixth, closing out the game from the bullpen.
