Softball Grabs Two Wins in Lengthy Day at Inspiration Field

Titans move to 9-5 overall

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A lengthy day that featured a two-hour weather delay resulted in a pair of wins for the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team Saturday, March 29, as the Titans claimed a 14-7 win over Wartburg College to start the day before taking down DePauw University, 6-1, several hours later. With the wins, Illinois Wesleyan moves to 9-5 on the season.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 14, Wartburg 7
A timely snag by senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) at shortstop saw junior Gianna Certa (Grayslake, Ill.-Grayslake North) work around a first-inning baserunner to keep the game scoreless ahead of IWU's first at bats.

Illinois Wesleyan's offense wasted no time getting going as sophomore Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) drew an inning-opening walk. She moved to second on a groundout and then promptly slid safely into third with a stolen base. Junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) ripped an RBI double down the left field line and later scored on a double steal to open up a 2-0 advantage. Senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) brought home a run with a two-bagger of her own and freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) later singled to drive IWU ahead, 5-0.

Big swings by the Knights saw Wartburg club three homers, including a two-run shot in the fifth to cut the Titan lead to one, 5-4.

The Green and White got four runs back in the fourth, using four hits and three Wartburg errors to manufacture the offensive production. IWU's first four batters reached base as miscues by the Knights extended the lead to three, 7-4. Kuhn added a sacrifice fly and crafty base running upped the Titans ahead, 9-4.

Wartburg scrapped three runs across the plate in the sixth to pull within two, 9-7, but Illinois Wesleyan went right back to work in its half of the frame. Pinter started the frame with a double and Khoury walked to put two on with one out. Junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and freshman Jillian Bollard (Roselle, Ill.-Saint Viator) drove runs to bring Kuhn to the plate with the bases juiced. The senior took full advantage of the RBI opportunity, depositing a bases-clearing double to left field to give IWU a seven-run cushion, 14-7.

Illinois Wesleyan used 15 hits and seven Wartburg errors to rack up 14 runs, while the Knights finished with seven hits. Five different Titans notched multi-hit efforts, with Pinter and Post each going 3-for-4. Kuhn, Khoury, and Wilkens added two hits apiece. Kuhn was credited with a team-high four RBIs, while five others drove in runs in the win.

Certa went 4.2 innings, earning the win as the starter. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out two. Sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) threw the final 2.1 frames en route to the save. Holland limited the Knights to one hit and fanned two, but was tagged for three runs.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 6, DePauw 1
Milgazo got the Titans started right where they left off the first game of the day nearly 10 hours later, as the sophomore outfielder used her speed to beat out an infield single. After two straight steals from Milgazo, Pinter and Wissmiller registered RBI singles to give the Green and White a 2-0 edge after one half inning of play.

DePauw split the lead in half with one swing in the bottom of the second, putting a ball into the left field bleachers for a solo homer.

Kuhn pulled a sure-hit out of the air and doubled up the Tigers at two to silence a threat and keep Illinois Wesleyan's lead at 2-1 into the fifth.

The Green and White secured two insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Beckman's one-out single was followed by an RBI double off the bat of Khoury as the Titan advantage grew to 3-1. Post continued things with a single and Brown capped the inning with a run-scoring knock to up the lead to three, 4-1.

Illinois Wesleyan produced two more runs in the seventh by way of a two-run hit by Beckman as the Titans carried a five-run cushion into the bottom of the seventh.

All nine batters tallied hits in the game, with Beckman pacing the team with a 2-for-4 effort. Milgazo swiped two bases, while Beckman added a team-high two RBIs.

Freshman Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) threw 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits with five Ks. Holland closed the game with 2.1 scoreless frames as she picked up her second save of the day.

Day two of the weekend tournament is scheduled for tomorrow, March 30. IWU is slated to play a doubleheader with Lake Forest College.
