Men’s Lacrosse Heads North for Battle with Calvin

Game time in Grand Rapids set for 5 p.m. ET

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – After two tough contests in Colorado Springs, Colo., a week ago, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team is back in the Midwest and headed to Grand Rapids, Mich. for a bout with Calvin University, Saturday, March 22. Game time is set for 5 p.m. ET at Zuidema Field. 

The Green and White, now 6-2 on the year, is coming off a two-game skid during its spring break trip to Colorado Springs where IWU saw its first losses this season to Colorado College, 19-11, and Ursinus, 15-11. 

Fifth-year Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) led the Titans in points for the week with seven, off five goals and two assists, while sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) was just behind with six points on four goals and two assists. Seniors Nick Horrocks (Boulder, Colo.-Fairview) and Sam Skelton (Porland, Ore.-Franklin) led IWU with three caused turnovers apiece while senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) totaled 32 saves across the two games with 15 stops against CC and 17 versus Ursinus. 

On the season, McHugh leads the team with 32 points as the Titans key distributor, totaling 23 assists and nine goals of his own. The sophomore holds a 2.88 assists per game average, a mark that ranks second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and sits 15th in Division III this season. Black has the second-most points scored with 29 on 23 goals and six assists. Fifth-year Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) rounds out the top three with 24 points, all coming by way of goals. 

Senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) holds a .613 faceoff win percentage going 92-for-150 at the X while leading the team with 41 ground balls. Skelton has anchored the Titan defense with 16 caused turnovers and totaling 24 scoops on the season. The Titans primary goalkeeper, Tervo is 5-2 in goal this season with a 10.89 goals against average. The senior has accrued 88 saves on the year with a .537 save percentage. 

Saturday's contest with Calvin will be the first time these two teams will meet. Calvin carries a 3-3 record into its Friday night game with Southwestern University before taking on the Titans Saturday, March 22 at 5 p.m. ET at Zuidema Field.
