Men’s Volleyball Downed by Augie

Titans host North Park Wednesday, March 19

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Returning to the court for the first time in two weeks, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team was swept in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play by Augustana College Saturday afternoon, March 15, by set scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-15. IWU's record falls to 11-8 with the loss, 1-4 in CCIW play, while Augie jumps to 11-9 (1-5 CCIW).

Illinois Wesleyan was led by sophomore Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), who put up 10 kills, 17 assists, four digs, and an ace in the loss. Reutter tied for the team lead in kills behind an impressive .474 attacking percentage. Freshman Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) also tallied 10 kills.

Senior Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) notched a team-high 18 assists and sophomore Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) accrued a team-leading seven digs alongside a team-best two blocks.

The Titans tallied 36 kills on the day with a .194 attacking percentage but could not keep pace with Augie's .329 clip as the Vikings recorded 37 kills. Augie also finished with advantages in digs (37-29) and blocks (4-3).

The Green and White scored the first three points of the opening set as a Reutter kill was sandwiched between two Augie errors. The Vikings scored the next three points to tie the score but back-to-back kills from Kuziela lifted the Titans to an 8-6 edge.

IWU and Augustana traded points with DiCosola breaking a tie with a set to freshman Gavin Rohlwing (Tower Lake, Ill.-Barrington) for a kill to keep the Green and White ahead, 12-11. The big swing was followed by four straight points by Augie as the Vikings drove ahead, 15-12.

The Titans battled back to tie the score a few times down the stretch, but consecutive kills gave the Vikings set point, 24-22. Reutter and Williams teamed up to thwart off Augie on a Williams kill before Augustana ended the set with a kill of its own, 25-23.

IWU faded in the final two sets, falling in straight sets.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts conference foe North Park University this Wednesday, March 19. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
