Women’s Tennis Drops Narrow Battle With UST

Titans fall to Celts, 4-3

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Fighting to the end, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team dropped a narrow dual with University of St. Thomas (Texas) Tuesday, March 11. With the loss, IWU dips to 6-9 on the season, while UST ups its record to 5-1.

The Titans opened the match by taking the one point decision in doubles play after notching wins in the top two spots. Playing in the No. 1 doubles slot, sophomores Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) secured the win with a score of 6-4. Freshmen Gabi Lipske (Gurnee, Ill.-Mundelein) and Katie Van Heuklon (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) followed with a 6-3 decision at No. 2 doubles, giving the Green and White the point.

Van Heuklon and Bell stayed hot in singles play, as the pair picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Van Heuklon took her sets with scores of 7-5, 6-3, while Bell locked in her win behind scores of 6-4, 6-1.

IWU could not steal one more singles spot, ultimately falling, 4-3. Illinois Wesleyan will take on Belhaven University Wednesday, March 12, at 9 a.m. Results will be posted on iwusports.com upon the completion of the contest.
