Men’s Lacrosse Claims Season Opener Win Over Transylvania

Titans to play Centre tomorrow at 3 p.m.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2025 season with a 16-10 win over Transylvania University in its first of two games at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. Saturday, Feb. 15. While IWU claims its first win of the season, Transylvania drops to 0-2.

Eight Titans got in on the scoring action against Transylvania highlighted by freshmen Carlo Adams (Knoxville, Tenn.-West) and Jeremy Langosch (Grayslake, Ill.-Warren Township) scoring their first collegiate goals.

A trio of Titans tied for the team-lead of four points with fifth-years Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) earning all his points by way of goals, while Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) added three goals and one assist and sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) had the reverse with three assists and one goal.

Defensively, senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) led the team with six ground balls while going 13-for-20 at the center circle in addition to scoring a goal. Senior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) caused three miscues, a game-high for the senior, while also scoring two goals and assisting on another.

Senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) played all 60 minutes between the pipes and  recorded 11 saves, good for a .524 save percentage.

McHugh found Weinberg for the first goal of the game just 19 seconds before assisting on Adams' first goal of his collegiate career as IWU took an early 2-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Adams put away his second goal of the game off the assist from junior Kaden Gammelgaard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich)

Transylvania clawed back from a three goal deficit as the first period ended with IWU up 5-4.

A rather uneventful second period for IWU saw the Pioneers go on a 3-1 scoring run to carry a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Just six seconds into the second half, Schroeder leveled the score at 7-all but the Pioneers answered with a goal a minute later to regain the advantage.

Eastburn tied it up off an assist by senior Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) before Black sparked a four-goal run for IWU featuring two goals from Black and one each from McHugh and fifth-year Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) to move ahead 12-8 with 2:47 left in the third period.

Transylvania put away a man-up goal at the end of the third to cut Illinois Wesleyan's lead to three heading into the final period.

Eastburn opened up the final 15 minutes with a goal thanks to an assist from junior Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine). Black continued to extend the lead off a Skelton helper. With seven minutes left to play, the Pioneers and Titans traded goals as the Titans secured a five-goal cushion.

Langosch scored his first collegiate goal in the last five minutes of play off the connection from Black to ice the 16-10 Titan victory.

Illinois Wesleyan will close out the weekend at the Music City Classic Sunday, Feb. 16 against Centre College at 3 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
