Women’s Hoops Earns CCIW Road Win at Augustana

Four Titans finish in double figures

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team began College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a win over Augustana College, 74-70, Wednesday, Dec. 3. IWU climbs to 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in CCIW play, while the Vikings dip to 3-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

Senior Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) led the Titans in scoring with 22, while fellow senior Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) added 18. Freshman Asia Kobylarczyk (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) chipped in 13, and senior Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points.

Freshman Caitlin Leyden (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) led the Titans in both rebounds with eight and recorded a career-high in steals with seven. White led the team in assists with four.

IWU was 24-of-60 (40 percent) from the floor and 6-of-20 (30 percent) from beyond the arc. Augustana dominated in points in the paint (42-20), while the Green and White capitalized on 25 Viking miscues, earning a 27-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Back-to-back three balls from Bardic and White halfway through the first quarter gave IWU a 16-10 cushion, but the Titan defense surrendered a 7-0 run near the end of the first 10 minutes to make it a one possession game, 24-21, heading into the second quarter.

A Bardic layup and freshman Ashley Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) pull-up jumper gave IWU a 28-25 lead into the media timeout. The Titans and Vikings continued to trade buckets throughout the second ten, but a 10-3 Augustana run throughout the next five minutes of play shifted the momentum towards the home team.

One of Leyden's five steals came in the final 90 seconds, as she dished it to White for a layup to get the Titans within four, 35-31, headed into the halftime break.

The Vikings and Titans again traded buckets for much of the third quarter, with neither team gaining an advantage of more than six. Three pointers from the freshmen duo of Leyden and Kobylarczyk at opportune times in the final minute of the third quarter gave IWU a 56-50 lead headed into the final period.

The Green and White continued its positive momentum into the final ten minutes, as two Bardic buckets and a White jumper gave IWU its largest lead of the game, 62-50, halfway through the fourth quarter.

Augie cut the Titan lead to six, 70-64, as Tia Lewis converted two free throws with 2:12 left in the clock. With the Green and White clinging to the lead, Bardic came up with a clutch steal to keep Augie from making it a one-point game.

The Vikings knocked down a late three-ball, but Bardic once again came up big. The senior hit free throws and then pulled in a rebound to preserve the lead and close out the win.

IWU continues CCIW action Saturday, Dec. 6 on the road at North Central College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside Gregory Arena in Naperville, Ill. and will serve as the front half of a twin bill with the Illinois Wesleyan men's squad.
