BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team defeated Carroll University, 4-3, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action Friday, Oct. 3. The Titans improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Pioneers drop to 4-4 (3-3 CCIW).
IWU took all of the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Juniors Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and
Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) edged Natasa Pupovac and Katherine Trifilio, 7-5. At two doubles, sophomores
Katie Van Heuklon (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and
Gabi Lipske (Gurnee, Ill.-Mundelein) took down Aalaiya Jacklin and Mia Franke, 6-3. Freshmen
Adia Douglas (Flossmoor, Ill.-Homewood-Flossmoor) and
Elana Religioso (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet) rounded out doubles action with a 7-5 win over Makayla Counsell and Nawal Souki at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Green and White split the six-match slate. With losses at No. 1 and 2 singles, Bell evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Counsell at four singles. Religioso put IWU ahead 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Van Heuklon clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Franke at No. 3 singles, breaking a 3-3 tie to propel Illinois Wesleyan to the 4-3 triumph.
The Titans continue CCIW play at home, Saturday, Oct. 3, against Carthage College. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Evergreen Racquet Club.
