Men’s Soccer Draws at Carroll

Titans conclude regular season at Neis Field Wednesday, Oct. 30

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team worked to a 1-1 draw in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play at Carroll University Wednesday night, Oct. 25. The Titans, who sit firmly in the CCIW Tournament, idle at 10-2-4 on the season and 4-1-2 in league play. CU ends conference play at 3-4-1 and 6-8-2 on the year as the Pioneers await their postseason fate pending Wednesday night's results.

The Titan and Pio offenses manufactured just four shots on target combined, garnering two apiece. Senior goalkeeper and all-time saves leader in program history, Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary-Grove), recorded one save, allowing one Pio goal in the first period. In a chippy match, where CCIW seeding implications loomed large, both teams combined for 22 fouls.

Following several opportunities, the Titans finally knocked one through in the 31st minute. Freshman Hunter Reinberg (Washington, Mo.-St. Francis Borgia) booted the ball off of a CU defender to earn a throw-in near goal. Following touches from two Titans 18 yards out, Reinberg gained control again and sailed one towards goal. Senior Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) headed the ball into the goalbox and a Pio defender headed it into his own goal.

The Green and White lead would not last long, as less than 10 minutes later, the Pioneers passed the ball down the sideline to beat the Illinois Wesleyan defense. Nathan Patzner drew Kedzior away from the goal line before giving it up to Pio teammate Marti Solanelles for the game-tying score.

It appeared that the Titans would grab the lead in the 60th minute, as a fastbreak opportunity gave junior Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Williams Fremd) the ball near the far corner. Rodino crossed one towards the six, as fellow junior Ryder Coleman (Bannockburn, Ill.-Deerfield) ran into the box and headed one into the goal. The cross was met by a knock into the back of the goal, but a late foul call on the Titans erased the Coleman goal, as the score remained deadlocked at one.

In a chippy end to the match, IWU had several opportunities to take the lead. The Titans had three corner kicks and five shot attempts in the final 10 minutes, but none would find the back of the net as the Pios and Titans drew, 1-1.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to the friendly confines of Neis Field one last time, Wednesday, Oct. 29, to round out the regular season against Millikin University. Kickoff under the lights in Bloomington, Ill. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
