Women’s Tennis Clashes with Carroll and Carthage

IWU seeks fourth straight win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team shifts back into College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play against Carroll University at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill. Friday, Oct. 3. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Titans continue their weekend, Saturday, Oct. 4 against Carthage College for a 10 a.m. bout. 

In its sweep over Concordia University Chicago last Sunday, IWU (4-2, 1-2 CCIW) controlled all of the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Juniors Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) blanked Amelia Engelman and Amirah Shakir, 6-0. At two doubles, sophomores Katie Van Heuklon (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and Gabi Lipske (Gurnee, Ill.-Mundelein) defeated Kathleen Castillo and Arriyanna Amison, 6-0. Freshmen Adia Douglas (Flossmoor, Ill.-Homewood-Flossmoor) and Elana Religioso (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet) followed with a 6-1 victory over Sarah Gustafson and Hannah Upole at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the Green and White continued to roll. Ehrlich took down Engelman 6-0, 6-0 at the top singles spot. Lipske defeated Shakir at two singles 6-2, 6-0. Van Heuklon blanked Castillo with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Bell joined her teammates with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hannah Upole at four singles. Douglas won 6-0, 6-0 over Amison at five singles. Religioso emerged with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Courtneye Schneider at the six singles spot to round out IWU's dominant effort.

Carroll (4-3, 3-2 CCIW) has won its last two dual matches, sweeping Elmhurst, Sunday Sept. 28 after taking down North Park, 5-2, Tuesday, Sept. 23. The Pioneers have won the last six matches against IWU. Last season, CU defeated the Titans, 6-1, with Bell being the lone victor at No. 4 singles.

Carthage (2-2, 2-2 CCIW) bounced back after dropping a 7-0 dual to Wheaton, Sept. 13 with a 7-0 blanking of Elmhurst, Sept. 24. The Firebirds have claimed the last 22 matches over the Green and White, including a 6-1 win last year. For Illinois Wesleyan, Bell defeated Greta Peterson at the fourth singles spot and Ehrlich and Bell took down Sasha Manojlovic and Giovanna Mendes at No. 1 doubles.
