Women’s Hoops Rolls to Win Over Augie

Fewest points allowed by IWU in a CCIW game in more than 10 years

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The second-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team led from wire-to-wire in a 75-38 win over Augustana College inside the Shirk Center Wednesday evening, Jan. 8. The Titans ran their record to 14-0 on the year, 5-0 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while the Vikings dropped to 5-8 (1-3 CCIW).

Augie's 38 points are the fewest the Titans have allowed since Nov. 11, 2022 when they limited Concordia Wisconsin to 38 points. It is also the fourth time IWU has kept an opponent below 40 points since 2012-13.

The game featured a balanced offensive showing for the Green and White, as 12 Titans scored points in the victory. Seniors Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) and Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) paced IWU with 11 points apiece, while senior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) and junior Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) chipping in nine points each. Senior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) and freshman Luigi Lam (Kowloon, Hong Kong-Wa Ying College) followed with eight-point efforts.

Knutson, Balli, and Huber tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece, while junior Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) notched a game-high five steals. Bardic, Powers, White, and Balli each dished out three assists. Bardic and junior Martha Lipic (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) recorded two blocks each.

Illinois Wesleyan dominated statistically, compiling leads in points off turnovers (39-11), points in the paint (38-16), second-chance points (19-2), fastbreak points (20-2), and bench points (34-16). The Titans won the rebounding battle, 52-35, and the turnover tally, 29-12.

The Green and White converted 29-of-76 shot attempts, hitting 8-of-35 three-point tries. IWU finished 9-for-15 at the free throw line. Augie finished with a field goal percentage of 26.0 percent (13-of-50), as the Vikings went just 2-for-19 from beyond the arc. The Vikings were strong at the charity stripe, finishing 10-for-11.

A three-pointer by junior Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) gave IWU a 10-point lead, 17-7, in the first quarter. White followed with a dish to Palmer and then an and-one of her own. After a Powers putback, Palmer knocked down free throws to give the Green and White a 28-7 lead after 10 minutes.

The Vikings would only manage points from the free throw line for more than a 10-minute span, as Illinois Wesleyan's lead hit 46-15 into halftime. The big lead at the break was fueled by a 28-point run by the Green and White as IWU ran away with the victory.

The Titans host North Central College this Saturday, Jan. 11, inside the Shirk Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will see IWU's recent Gold Glove winners recognized at halftime as well as a day-long celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Shirk Center.
