Aurora Hands Men’s Volleyball First Loss of Season

Titans fall in straight sets on the road

AURORA, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team was handed its first loss of the season at Aurora University Thursday night, Jan. 23. The Titans (4-1) fell in straight sets to the Spartans (1-0) with scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-12.

Never finding its footing from the start, IWU was limited to 22 kills on a .047 attack percentage, while Aurora finished with 33 on an efficient .356 clip. The Green and White also faced deficits in digs (33-29), assists (31-20), aces (10-1), and blocks (4-2).

Sophomore Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) led the team in kills with six. Senior Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) followed closely with five, and sophomore Patrick Dasbach (Lombard, Ill.-Willowbrook) had four. Senior Luke Hartke (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) notched the lone ace for the Titans in the contest.

The duo of senior Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) and sophomore Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) split setting duties in the match. DiCosola finished with a team-high 11 assists, while Reutter recorded eight.

Defensively, junior Jace Milka (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the team with eight digs. Senior Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) was second with six, and freshman Trey Marek (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) registered a career-high five digs. Reutter recorded two blocks, while Dasbach and Williams each had one rejection.

The Titans will take a weekend off from action before returning to the Shirk Center for seven straight home matches. IWU kicks off the stretch at home by hosting Marian University Tuesday, Jan. 28. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
