Men’s Soccer Blows by Blackburn

IWU takes a 5-0 game against Beavers

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team soared past Blackburn College Sunday, Sept. 8 in a 5-nil matchup. IWU climbs to 2-0-1, while BC drops to 0-2-3.

The Titans were dominant for the entirety of the game against Blackburn scoring four of its five goals in the first half. Junior Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and sophomore Faheem Mujahid (Saint Robert, Mo-Waynesville) each scored two goals apiece with a single goal from sophomore Ryder Coleman (Bannockburn, Ill.-Deerfield).

Each goal had a particular flair to complete the 5-nil win. Senior Devyn Kennedy (Edwardsville, Ill.-Edwardsville) had the first assist of the game on Mujahid's goal. With a quick pass and a bounce off the goalkeeper's hand, Mujahid had an easy pass to the back of the net to start off a 1-nil game in minute four.

After 30 scoreless minutes, Tierney saw his opportunity to score off of a free kick from senior Declan Nugent (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley). With a 25 yard boot from Nugent, Tierney took a diving header to score the first goal of his career.

Three minutes later, Coleman scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from Tierney and a swift right kick low left from Coleman, the ball rolled straight to the back of the netting narrowly avoiding the keepers' gloves.

Tierney scored once again at the end of the half, in minute 43, to bring the Titans to a 4-nil lead going into halftime. Only ten minutes into the second half, Mujahid moved through two defenders to face the Beavers' goalkeeper in a one-on-one battle. Mujahid, from point blank, chipped it right over the keepers' head and into the goal to gain the five goal advantage.

IWU dominated in shots with a 24-2 lead against the Beavers and took assists on each goal too. Tierney ended the game with five points on his two goals and one assist.

All three keepers for the Green and White spent time in goal, with junior Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) starting between the pipes for 62 minutes of the game and shared the wealth with fellow junior Brayden Gemaehlich (Fort Collins, Colo.-Fossil Ridge) for 21 minutes while freshman keeper Tyler Balon (LaGrange, Ill.-Lyons Township) found his first minutes in goal on the year for the remainder of the contest.

Each field player entered the game for an entertaining atmosphere for all in attendance at Nies Field. The Titans will return home this Friday, Sept. 13 for a nonconference matchup against Rockford University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
