Ehrlich and Bell edge past Vikings in singles action

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Playing its second match in as many days, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team fell to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe North Park University Saturday, Sept. 14. With the loss, IWU dips to 2-2 overall, 0-2 in CCIW action, while NPU remains perfect with a 4-0 overall record, 3-0 in league play.

After being shutout in paired play, the Titans saw a response from sophomores Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington), as both picked up wins in singles play.

Battling the top Vikings player, Hanna Zethraeus, Ehrlich edged out the win at No. 1 singles. Opening the contest with a 6-4 win in the first set, the Springfield, Ill. native dropped the second set, 6-2, to have to play a tiebreaker. The sophomore responded, taking the tiebreaker, 10-5.

Playing in the No. 3 singles spot, Bell blanked her opponent, 6-0, in the first set to get ahead. North Park's Katja Carlberg snuck past Bell in the second, winning it 7-6 (5). Bell battled back to secure the tiebreaker, 11-9, earning the victory.

Illinois Wesleyan remains home, as the Green and White host Millikin University Wednesday, Sept. 18, with a 4 p.m. start.
