NORMAN, Okla. - The Golf Coaches Association of America announced the Cobalt All-America Scholars Thursday, July 25. The Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team was well-represented as five Titans garnered the distinction, tying for the second-most across NCAA Division III. Receiving the accolade were sophomores Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) and Michael Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.-Hinsdale Central), juniors Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice) and Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township), and fifth-year Bobby Beaubien (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington).
To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, under 79.0 in NCAA Division III, under 78.0 in NAIA, and under 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
In all, 208 NCAA Division III athletes from 81 schools earned 2023-24 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar honors. Trine had six recipients, tied with Georgia Southern, Mercer, Texas Tech, Yale (NCAA Division I), Missouri S&T (NCAA Division II), and Texas Wesleyan (NAIA) for the most recipients from one school across all six divisions in 2023-24. Eight NCAA Division III schools had at least five recipients, including Emory (5), Illinois Wesleyan (5), LeTourneau (5), Mary Hardin-Baylor (5), RPI (5), Stevens (5), Trine (6), and Washington & Lee (5).
Bai, a business major, collects his first Cobalt All-America Scholar honor after his sophomore campaign. Playing in 28 rounds and 11 tournaments, Bai posted an average of 73.5 strokes per round en route to his second PING All-Region honor of his young career. He recorded two top-five finishes, three top-10 finishes, and eight top-20 placements, posting 10 rounds of par-or-better. Bai earned All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin honors with a fourth-place finish behind a score of even par (216) at the league championship and placed tied for 73rd at the NCAA Division III Championship with a 72-hole score of 299.
A sophomore entrepreneurship major, Spitzer grabbed the award for the first time in his career. A GCAA All-America Honorable Mention, Spitzer posted an average of 73.5 strokes over 22 rounds. He totaled 10 rounds of par-or-better, collected four top-10 finishes and one top-five placement on the year. Spitzer tied for eighth at the NCAA Division III Championship, finishing five-under at 221. The runner-up at the CCIW Championship, he was named All-CCIW, PING and All-Region.
Clifford, a business major with a 4.00 grade point average, adds the honor to a list of academic nods that include College Sports Communicators First Team Academic All-America, CCIW Elite 26 recipient, and Academic All-CCIW. Competing in 11 tournaments, Clifford turned in five top-10 finishes with a 73.2 stroke average over 28 rounds. The junior totaled seven rounds of par-or-better and was named the CCIW Golfer of the Week twice this season. He rounded out the Titans' sweep of the top-five placings at the CCIW Championship to earn all-conference accolades and also reeled in PING All-Region honors.
Pohl posted a scoring average of 73.0 over 28 rounds and 11 tournaments. A business major, Pohl was Illinois Wesleyan's top finisher at the NCAA Division III National Championship as he tied for third at the national tournament to mark the highest finish by a Titan since 2012. The Western Springs, Ill. native posted the lowest single round and 72-hole scoring totals by a Titan at the national tournament ever. He totaled 13 rounds of par-or-better with five top-five finishes. Pohl placed third at the Millikin Butts Classic, tied for second at the IWU Invitational and the Take Back the Night Challenge, and finished third at the CCIW Championship. In addition to being named a PING All-America Honorable Mention, Pohl garnered all-region CSC Academic All-America Third Team status, CSC Academic All-District, Academic All-CCIW, and All-CCIW honors, as well as two CCIW Golfer of the Week accolades this season.
Beaubien capped off a sensational career with a strong senior campaign. The CCIW Men's Golf of the Year, Beaubien was also named PING All-Region, a PING Third Team All-American, as well as All-CCIW. He recorded IWU's best scoring average of the season, tallying 72.8 strokes per round over 28 rounds and 11 tournaments. A marketing major, he tallied a single-round low of 67, while totaling three top-five finishes and five top-10 placements. Beaubien won both the CCIW Preview and the CCIW Championship and added a runner-up finish at the Millikin Butts Classic.
