GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team saw a program record three student-athletes receive College Sports Communicators Academic All-America At-Large honors Wednesday, July 17, as the organization announced its final awardees of the academic year. Junior
Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice) landed on the CSC Academic All-America First Team, while fifth-year
Bobby Beaubien (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) and junior
Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) garnered second and third team honors, respectively.
The trio was joined on CSC's Academic All-America At-Large list by senior men's lacrosse defenseman Ethan Hart. IWU's four At-Large Academic All-America selections are the most in school history. Additionally, Illinois Wesleyan's 10 total CSC Academic All-America selections during the 2023-24 academic year are the most in a single year in school history.
Clifford repeated with the prestigious honor, climbing onto the first team after receiving a third team nod last spring. He is just the second multiple time CSC Academic All-America in program history, joining Rob Wuethrich, who received the honors in 2020 and 2021. Competing in 11 tournaments, Clifford turned in five top-10 finishes with a 73.2 stroke average over 28 rounds. The junior, who maintains a 4.00 GPA as a business major, totaled seven rounds of par-or-better. Clifford was named the CCIW Golfer of the Week twice this season and rounded out the Titans' sweep of the top-five placings at the CCIW Championship to earn all-conference accolades. He was the recipient of the CCIW Elite 26 award and was a PING All-Region honoree for the second time in his career.
Beaubien, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Golfer of the Year, was a GCAA PING Third Team All-American. He recorded IWU's best scoring average of the season, tallying 72.8 strokes per round over 28 rounds and 11 tournaments. A marketing major, he tallied a single-round low of 67, while totaling three top-five finishes and five top-10 placements. Beaubien won both the CCIW Preview and the CCIW Championship. He added a runner-up finish at the Millikin Butts Classic. He was also recognized as the CCIW's Golfer of the Week once this season to go along with All-CCIW and GCAA PING All-Region honors.
Illinois Wesleyan's top finisher at the NCAA Division III National Championship, Pohl tied for third at the national tournament to mark the highest finish by a Titan since 2012. The Western Springs, Ill. native posted the lowest single round and 72-hole scoring totals by a Titan at the national tournament ever. Pohl, a business major, recorded a scoring average of 73.0 over 28 rounds and 11 tournaments. He totaled 13 rounds of par-or-better with five top-five finishes. Pohl placed third at the Millikin Butts Classic, tied for second at the IWU Invitational and the Take Back the Night Challenge, and finished third at the CCIW Championship. In addition to being named a PING All-America Honorable Mention, Pohl garnered all-region and All-CCIW honors, as well as two CCIW Golfer of the Week accolades this season.
In total, nine of the 45 Division III Academic All-America selections were men's golf student-athletes. Additionally, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin saw seven student-athletes earn the honor with IWU's four selections leading the way while Augustana College had two and North Central College had one.
Furthermore, IWU's all-time Academic All-American list now sits at 160, which is top-25 across NCAA Division I, II, and III, as well as top-10 in Division III. To view the list of Illinois Wesleyan's all-time awardwinners, click here.
