Pohl & Spitzer Earn All-American Honors as Men’s Golf Places Eighth at NCAA Championship

BOULDER CREEK, Nev. - Junior Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) and sophomore Michael Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) led the Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team with top-10 individual finishes as the Titans grabbed eighth-place at the NCAA Division III National Championship Friday, May 17. The Green and White carded a final round 284 on the par-72, 7377-yard Boulder Creek Golf Course for the program's eighth top-10 finish.

Pohl capped off an outstanding week with a five-under 67 to tie for third, marking the highest finish by a Titan since Dex Reese tied for third at the 2012 championship event. The junior posted a four-day total of 280, the best at the NCAA Championship in program laurels to earn All-American status.

Spitzer, in his national championship debut, tied for eighth to earn All-American status alongside Pohl. Using a final round score of three-under 69, Spitzer totaled a 283.

Fifth-year Bobby Beaubien (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) tied for 71st, while sophomore Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) earned a share of 73rd. Junior Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice) rounded out the Titans, tying for 77th.

Methodist captured the team title with a final score of 1131, with Carnegie Mellon taking second at 1132. Oglethorpe's Michael O'Sullivan took home medalist honors with a 12-under 276.
