Softball Soars into CCIW Tournament Title Game

Championship game set for 12 p.m. Saturday, May 11

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A strong start propelled the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team to the championship day of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament as the Titans defeated second-seeded Augustana College, 6-2, Friday afternoon, May 10.

Sophomore Anna Beckman's (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) speed put pressure on the Augustana defense in the bottom of the first, ultimately leading to an error, and the leadoff batter aboard for the Green and White in the bottom of the first. Freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) and junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases with nobody out. Coming through in the cleanup spot, sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) blasted a no-doubter to straight away center field to give IWU a 4-0 lead.

Augustana used an error and three hits to plate two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the IWU lead in half, 4-2. The Vikings drove a deep fly ball to center with nobody out and the bases juiced, but Beckman hauled in the catch at the fence and the runner was called for leaving early as the Titans avoided further damage.

Milgazo led the Titans' half of the inning off with a single and was pushed to second on Kuhn's sacrifice bunt. Wissmiller poked a single to the gap in right-center and Milgazo used her speed to slide home safely, pushing IWU ahead, 5-2.

Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) worked around a single in the sixth, using a popup, groundout, and strikeout to keep the lead at three before the Titans tacked on an insurance run.

A two-out knock by Beckman, a single by Milgazo, and a wild pitch put runners on the corners. Kuhn capitalized on the scoring opportunity with an RBI single to center, extending the lead to 6-2 into the seventh.

The Vikings did not go down without a fight, registering three hits in their final trip to the plate. A two-out single up the middle started the rally and was followed by two more base knocks, including a run-scoring single to right. Freshman JD Dowling (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park) ultimately made the final out on a diving liner to left to strand two and give IWU the 6-3 victory.

The Green and White tallied 10 hits, with four Titans picking up two-or-more. Milgazo led the way with a 3-for-3 effort that featured two runs scored, while Beckman, Kuhn, and Wissmiller tallied two apiece.

Certa went the distance in the circle for her 18th complete game of the season. The Third Lake, Ill. native allowed three runs, one earned, on eight hits, while striking out seven. With the win, Certa bumped her record to 17-2 on the year.

With the win, Illinois Wesleyan advances to the championship day of the tournament. The title game will get underway with a 12 p.m. first pitch. Advancing in the winner's bracket, IWU will square off against the winner of the elimination game between second-seeded Augie and third-seeded Millikin University.
