Baseball Eclipses Cardinals, 4-2 at Home

Back at home Tuesday, April 9 against Wheaton

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Just two days removed from splitting its doubleheader with North Central College in Naperville, Ill. the Illinois Wesleyan Univeristy baseball team brought the Cardinals to Horenberger Field for the third and final game of the series. The Titans held off the Cardinals, 4-2, as IWU moves to 15-9 and 5-3 in CCIW play while NCC falls to 8-13, 3-3 CCIW.

Getting going early, junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) notched a single to right center before sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) ripped a double to right field prompting a Cardinal error that brought Gadomski home and advanced Flagg to third. Flagg would eventually be left stranded but the Titans took a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning.

IWU continued to keep NCC scoreless going into the fourth while finding an opportunity to stretch the TItan lead. Junior Sebastian Edenhofer (Elmhurst, Ill.-York Community) took advantage of being walked, advancing to second on a grounded out just in time for freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) to thread the right field line for an RBI single. Illinois Wesleyan moved ahead 2-0 to close out the fourth inning.

The fifth inning saw sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) lead off with a single up the middle followed by senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) who managed to split the Cardinals' defense with a shallow single to right field, advancing Willard to second. A pair of grounded outs would eventually bring Willard home to help IWU climb to 3-0 heading into the final four innings.

Perona got to work in the seventh inning with a scorching double down the right field line and advancing on a grounded out in the next at bat. Woltman mimicked Perona's double, this time smoking it down the left field line to bring Perona home and prompting a Cardinal pitching change with the Titans leading 4-0.

NCC battled back within two in the top of the eighth but the Titans' defense held off the Cardinals through the ninth inning to win their fifth conference game this season.

Perona, Gadomski, and Ferraro each had two hits a piece with Ferraro notching one RBI on the day. Woltman added two RBIs on one hit while four more Titans were good for one hit to make up the Titans 11 hits compared to NCC's nine. Sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was good for seven innings on the mound, striking out seven batters and allowing six hits. Junior Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) and junior Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) each pitched one inning. Schwab faced only three batters and struck out two.

The Titans have a full slate of home games this week following today's rescheduled game. IWU will be back at Horenberger Field tomorrow, Tuesday, April 9 for a single game against CCIW foe, Wheaton College at 5 p.m. before hosting Beloit College for one game on Thursday, a CCIW doubleheader versus Augustana College on Saturday, and another single game against Monmouth College on Sunday.
