Turner & Wissmiller Power Titans Past Tigers

Wissmiller belts second grand slam of the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Late-game heroics lifted the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team to a 9-6 win over DePauw University Sunday, April 7, at Inspiration Field. Senior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) registered her third home run of the season to walk it off against the Tigers as IWU improved to 13-6 on the season. DePauw dipped to 10-11-1 with the loss.

Trailing 1-0 after two and a half innings, the Titans saw sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) power the Green and White ahead. Sophomore Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) started the rally with a one-out knock to right center before sophomore Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais Ill.-Bishop McNamara) drew a four-pitch walk. A single by freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) loaded the bases for Wismmiller, who blasted the first pitch of her at bat out to straight-away center. The grand slam, Wissmiller's second the season, pushed IWU ahead, 4-1.

The game was far from over though, as the Tigers plated two in the fourth before leveling the score with a homer in the fifth.

Illinois Wesleyan reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating a pair with two outs. Wissmiller walked and stole second before scoring on junior Jen Kuhn's (Normal, Ill.-University High) single. Junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) slapped a double down the third-base line to drive in Kuhn to give IWU a two-run lead, 6-4.

DePauw stormed back, scoring for the fourth straight inning, as the Tigers plated two runs in their next trip to the plate. Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) won out in a full count, sending a batter down looking to strand the bases loaded and send the Titans back to the plate with a score knotted, 6-6.

Certa tossed a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, aided by a stellar play in bunt defense from freshman Elyssa Stenger (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic), to set the table for the walk-off.

The rally started with a Wissmiller single to center and continued on Kuhn's knock to right center. Heady baserunning put runners on the corners with nobody out and Wismmiller, representing the winning run, on third. Turner battled to a 2-2 count, eventually cranking a walk-off three-run round-tripper to give IWU the 9-6 victory in thrilling fashion.

The Green and White finished with eight hits to DePauw's nine, with Wissmiller and Kuhn notching two apiece. Wissmiller and Turner accounted for four and three RBIs, respectively.

Certa went the distance in the circle, fanning five in a complete game victory to move to 6-2 on the year.

Illinois Wesleyan begins College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play Wednesday, April 7, with a doubleheader against Millikin University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Inspiration Field.
