One Up, One Down for Softball at NCC

Titans host Carthage tomorrow, April 20

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Playing its first two games of a six-game stretch, the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a doubleheader at North Central College Friday, April 19. IWU blanked NCC, 2-0, in game one but then fell, 4-0, in game two. Illinois Wesleyan's record dipped to 17-8 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while NCC jumped to 20-6 on the year and 5-3 in the league.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 2, North Central 0
The game began with a lengthy at bat by sophomore Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) that ultimately resulted in a walk. A one-out triple to right by junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) brought home Beckman, who also swiped second to move into scoring position. Sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) powered an RBI single up the middle to double the IWU lead to 2-0 after one half inning.

North Central strung a pair of hits together in the fourth, the Cardinals' first base knocks of the day. Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) buckled down though, getting three straight shallow fly balls to thwart the NCC opportunity and strand two.

Certa only allowed one hit from that point on as she led the Titans to a 2-0 victory. She finished with seven strikeouts in a complete game effort while yielding three hits.

Kuhn, Wissmiller, and senior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) each tallied a hit.

Game Two: North Central 4, Illinois Wesleyan 0
NCC turned the tables on the Titans in the second game, using a triple down the right-field line to grab a 1-0 edge in its first turn at the plate.

The Cardinals used three hits to tack on two in the fifth before adding an insurance run on a two-out RBI single in the seventh.

Down to their final at bats, the Titans could not break through as IWU fell, 4-0.

Sophomore Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) tossed a complete game, finishing with a career-high seven strikeouts, but was sacked with the loss.

Illinois Wesleyan totaled five hits to North Central's nine, with five different players recording a knock.

IWU sees a quick turnaround as the Green and White hosts Carthage College tomorrow, April 20. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Inspiration Field.
