Baseball Falls to Ripon in Extras

Titans to play Stockton tomorrow, March 10

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - In the midst of the beautiful warm weather, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team began its spring break slate by taking on Ripon College, Saturday, March 9 at the RussMatt Invitational. IWU lost to Ripon in 10 innings by a final score of 4-3.

IWU scored the first run of the game with junior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) coming home on senior Louis Perona's (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) single to push the Green and White ahead, 1-0. The Titans held off the Red Hawks till the fifth inning when they scored to tie up the game 1-1.

The Titans let two more go in the sixth to lose the lead 3-1.

However, in the ninth inning, the Green and White made a comeback to go into extra innings. With Perona on base, junior Justin Gadomski (Shaumburg, Ill.-Shaumburg) singled up the middle to get Perona home to get the score 3-2. After an error made by Ripon's third baseman, Gadomski was able to run home to tie up the game 3-3.

Casey Swanson's (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka) one out single gave IWU a chance in the top of the 10th, but a pair of fly outs kept the threat from materializing.

Ripon reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning, platting the winning-run on a leadoff walk. A second walk was followed by a sacrifice bunt to put the deciding run on third, where a sacrifice fly finished the game, 4-3.

IWU pitched three pitchers for the entirety of the game, junior Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) was credited with the loss.

The Green and White will continue to play in Auburndale by squaring off with Stockton University tomorrow, Sunday March 10. First pitch is set for 3:45 p.m. ET at Lake Mrytle Sports Complex.
