Softball Splits at Lake Forest

Titans host Coe Wednesday, April 3

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team saw its nine-game win streak snapped at Lake Forest College Saturday, March 30, as the Titans split a doubleheader with the Foresters. IWU (11-5) notched a 8-2 win in game one, but LFC (8-8) salvaged the sweep as it took game two, 9-3.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 8, Lake Forest 2
The Titans shook off a first-inning homer by the Foresters with runs in four straight innings. IWU plated its first run of the day on a sacrifice lineout by sophomore Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) in the third before tacking on two more in the fourth.

Sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) whacked a one-out double to right center, before junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) singled to put runners on the corners. A double steal saw Wissmiller scamper home, before freshman Elyssa Stenger's (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) sac fly up the Titan advantage to two, 3-1.

After Lake Forest used another solo homer to pull back within one, the Green and White plated four runs on six hits in the fifth to take control. Freshman JD Dowling (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park) singled to the pitcher and took second on a wild pitch, before a sac bunt pushed her to third with Beckman coming to bat. Taking full advantage of the RBI opportunity, Beckman smoked a single to center to drive in Dowling. Freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) and junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) notched back-to-back singles to load the bases. Wissmiller kept the hit party going with a two-run double down the left field line, before Stenger's two-run single gave IWU a five-run cushion, 7-2.

IWU's final run of the game came in the sixth, with an RBI single by Wissmiller to complete the 8-2 victory.

In all, Illinois Wesleyan finished with 13 hits. Wissmiller headlined the offense with a 3-for-4 showing that included three RBIs. Stenger tied for the team lead with three driven in as part of a 1-for-3 effort. Beckman, Milgazo, and senior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) notched two hits each.

Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) secured her fifth win of the season in the circle with a complete game. Certa struck out four over seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Lake Forest 9
The Titans found themselves behind early, as the Foresters put up five runs on six hits and an error in the first inning.

Illinois Wesleyan saw its first base runner of the game in the third, as senior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) homered down the left field line to leadoff the inning.

Lake Forest responded with two runs in the third, but a solo homer by Wissmiller came with one out in the fourth.

Trailing 9-2 into the seventh, an error gave IWU life in its final at bats but a bases loaded walk proved to be the final run of the game. Beckman drew the bases loaded free pass to make it a 9-3 game, but a groundout ended the game and Illinois Wesleyan's comeback attempt.

The Green and White recorded six hits in the game, with Turner going 2-for-3.

Freshman Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) made a lengthy relief appearance, striking out one over 5.2 innings, while sophomore Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) was the pitcher of record.

IWU looks to bounce back Wednesday, April 3, as it hosts Coe College at Inspiration Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
