Men’s Lacrosse Soars Past Southwestern

Titans host Dubuque Wednesday, April 3

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Playing inside Tucci Stadium for the first time since March 2, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team defeated Southwestern University, 20-8 Thursday night, March 28. After winning the first of three straight home games, IWU moves to 5-3 on the year as Southwestern dips to 2-10.

Quickly following a ground ball scoop by junior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), the Titans would score the opening goal of the game as Weinberg's dish gave senior Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) a one-on-one look against the Pirate's goalkeeper. Southwestern answered with three straight goals in the opening 15 minutes before senior Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) scored off a Weinberg assist to bring the score back within one at 3-2 to close the quarter.

Black's late goal to end the opening period sparked a six-goal Illinois Wesleyan run into the second. Eastburn, sophomore Kaden Gammelgaard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich), and Seeley each scored in the first five minutes of the second to push IWU ahead, 5-3.

In the matter of a nine-second span, Eastburn and Lombardo extended the lead further. After scooping up a rebound, Eastburn buried a shot into the back of the net. Lombardo then won the ensuing faceoff and quickly capitalized to drive IWU to a 7-3 lead with just under eight minutes left in the half. IWU's defense rallied to hold Southwestern to just one goal in the second period while sophomore Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) and senior Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) each notched a goal to take a 9-4 lead headed into halftime.

The Green and White broke from halftime scoring three goals in under two minutes with Weinberg, Gammelgaard, and Seeley to thank for the 12-4 advantage over the Pirates. After nearly five uneventful minutes of play, Black put away a goal just 46 seconds before junior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) scored a man-up goal off a Seeley dish to move ahead by double-digits, 14-4. The Titans and Pirates traded points in the final three minutes of the third quarter as IWU maintained a healthy 15-6 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Green and White continued rolling over the final 15 minutes, as goals by Weinberg, two from Eastburn and a pair from junior Bobby Conroy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University HS) allowed the Titans to run away with a 20-8 victory.

Seeley and Eastburn led IWU with four goals apiece, while Seeley and Weinberg tied for the team lead with six points each. Seeley added two assists to go along with his four goals. Weinberg went for three goals and three helpers.

Senior Michael Campagna (Arlington Heights, Ill.-St. Viator) paced Illinois Wesleyan with five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Meanwhile, junior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) tallied nine saves as he picked up the win between the posts.

IWU is set to host the University of Dubuque Wednesday, April 3 for the second game of its three-home-game stretch before kicking off conference play against Augustana College at Tucci Stadium Saturday, April 6.
