Softball Stays Hot with Sweep of Scots

Titans boost record to 8-4

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball extended its win streak to six in-a-row with a sweep of Monmouth College Thursday, March 21, in its home opener at Inspiration Field. IWU jumped to 8-4 on the season with a 21-2 run-rule win in the first game, before taking game two, 7-1. Monmouth saw its record dive to 1-13.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 21, Monmouth 2 (5 inn.)
The Titans put up double-digit hits and runs for the third straight game to kickoff the first leg of the double feature. IWU's 21 runs are good for second-most in program history, as well as the most since the Green and White set the record with 24 at North Park April 4, 2006.

Illinois Wesleyan's 15 hits came from 10 different players. Sophomore Anna Beckman (Bourbannais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a homer, all of which led the team. Fellow sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) added a 2-for-4 showing that featured a grand slam.  In all, Wissmiller drove in a team-high five and tied for the team lead with three runs scored. Senior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) and junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) added two hits apiece, while Fontanetta tallied a career-high five RBIs.

Sophomore Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) and senior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) split duties in the circle. Gatchell moved to 3-1 in the circle as she tossed three innings with two strikeouts. Turner threw two frames of one-hit ball in relief, with two strikeouts.

Beckman started the scoring with a solo line drive homer to left in the bottom of the first, before the Titans erupted for 11 runs in the second. Run-scoring singles from freshman Elyssa Stenger (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) and Fontanetta opened up a 4-0 lead, before junior Jen Kuhn's (Normal, Ill.-University High) bases-loaded walk pushed the score to 5-0.

The rally continued with Wissmiller's grand slam, her second homer of the season, before Fontanetta singled to score two more. Milgazo doubled to drive home Fontanetta as IWU took a 12-0 advantage into the third.

After Monmouth used a two-run round-tripper to get on the board, IWU put up three runs in the third and six runs in the fourth to run away with the win, 21-2, in five innings.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 7, Monmouth 1
The Titans recorded seven runs on nine hits in game two to complete the sweep. Beckman paced the Green and White with a 3-for-4 showing, while Wissmiller hit her second home run of the day in a 2-for-4 effort. Sophomore Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) added a 2-for-3 game at the plate and tied Turner for the team lead with two RBIs.

Freshman Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) picked the first win of her collegiate career in the circle, going four innings. She yielded just three hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake Central) tossed the final three innings, striking out three and allowing one run on two hits.

With the game scoreless into the bottom of the second, Khoury drew a leadoff walk. After an error on a sac bunt attempt, runners stood at second and third for Turner with nobody out. Turner drove a run in on a sac fly to score the game's first run of the day, before Post clubbed a two-run homer to open up a 3-0 IWU advantage.

Illinois Wesleyan tacked on two more in the third, this time on an RBI single from Khoury and another sac fly from Turner.

Monmouth clubbed a solo homer to left in the fifth to trim the Titan lead to four, 5-1.

IWU got the run right back in the bottom of the fifth, as Wissmiller whacked a solo shot to left to kick off the inning.

The Titans' final run of the day came in the seventh via an error as the Green and White completed the sweep, 7-1.
