Baseball’s Win Streak Snapped by Lyons

Titans close out spring break trip tomorrow, March 16, at 9 a.m. ET

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Errors and a slow offensive start plagued the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team in a 18-8 run-rule loss to Wheaton College (Mass.) Friday afternoon, March 15, at the RussMat Invitational. IWU saw its win streak halted at four as its record dropped to 8-4. Wheaton drove its record to 2-3 with the win.

Illinois Wesleyan fell behind early as Wheaton scored six runs over the first two innings to charge ahead, 6-0, into the third.

IWU tallied just two hits over the first four innings, while WC tacked on to its lead with a four-run fourth.

Trailing 10-0 into the fifth, the Titans saw senior Michael Passarelli (Chicago, Ill.-De La Salle) rip a pinch-hit, two-out double to right-center. Junior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) followed with an RBI single, but the rally ended with IWU staring down a 10-1 deficit.

Wheaton responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the fifth and six more in the sixth to balloon its lead to 18-1 into the seventh.

IWU's offense found its stride, plating seven runs on five hits, a walk, and two hit batters. Freshman Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) singled to get things started, before sophomore Jimmy Martin (Western Springs, Ill.-Fenwick) and Passarelli walked and wore one to load the bases. Gurgone rocketed a single up the middle to drive in Novak, and W Duff added an RBI groundout. A two-run two-bagger off the bat of junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) and a RBI single from Novak were followed by Martin's two-run single, but the comeback ended there, 18-8.

Junior Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield), the starter on the mound for the Green and White, was tagged for nine hits in the game. Banks gave up just one earned run as four errors plagued the Titans.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with 10 hits on the day, while Wheaton tallied 17. Gurgone went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, while Novak went 2-for-3 with one driven in and one run scored. Martin and Gadomski added two RBIs apiece.

The Titans finish out their trip to the Sunshine State tomorrow, March 16, against University of Minnesota-Morris. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET on field one at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
