Baseball Continues Hot Streak with Third win in Florida

Titans match up with Simpson College next

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team continued its hot streak in Auburndale, Fla. Tuesday, March 12. The Titans played the University of Southern Maine, beating the Huskies 8-5 to move IWU's record to 7-3.

After a quiet first inning for both the Huskies and the Titans, Southern Maine was the first to put runs on the board in the top of the third, scoring three. IWU did not let the lead last for long, as the Titans picked up the pace to close out the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Green and White started with a series of walks from junior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence), senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech), and junior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North), who was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded, junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Gurgone home.

On a wild pitch, Perona ran home and Woltman advanced to second. With an error by the Huskies' catcher, Woltman took off and nabbed another run for the Titans, tying the game up, 3-3. Junior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) hit a clutch shot to right field to run sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) in, giving the Titans a 4-3 lead.

The Titans did not let up in the fourth inning, shutting down the Huskies to quickly bring the offense back up. IWU stayed hot offensively with a Woltman two-bagger to right center, bringing Perona home to extend the lead to 5-3.

After no action in the fifth, the Green and White kept the ball rolling in the sixth, as Gurgone stole home to bring in another run.

IWU kept it consistent in the seventh with two more runs courtesy of junior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) and sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), upping the score to 8-3.

The Green and White let up two runs in the eighth inning, but the insurance runs gave the Titans an 8-5 victory.

The Titans ended the game with 10 hits to the Huskies four, while both teams ended up with two errors. Senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) was the starting pitcher on the bump and was credited with the win, bringing his record to 1-0 on the mound this season.

The Green and White get a short break before playing Thursday, March 14 against midwestern foe Simpson College. The first pitch is set for 3:30 P.M. ET.
