Women’s Basketball Falls to Pioneers in CCIW Tournament Championship

Titans will await NCAA Tournament selection show Monday, Feb. 26

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After a rough shooting night, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to Carroll University, 88-78, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship. The Titans fall to 22-5 overall, while Carroll improves to 23-4.

Illinois Wesleyan was held to a 30-for-76 showing in the contest, while the Pioneers capitalized on 34 of 62 shots. From long range, CU sank four of nine to finish the night 44.4-percent from deep, while IWU finished shooting 20-percent from three. Carroll saw advantages in rebounds (46-34) and assists (21-18), while IWU won the battle in turnovers (11-20), blocks (6-2), and steals (13-5). The Titans also held advantages in points off turnovers, scoring 16 to the Pio's 12, and second chance points (15-12), but Carroll scored 54 points in the paint to IWU's 24.

The Titans saw two players finish 20+ points. Junior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) led the team with 22 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double performance. Junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) posted 20 points along with a team-high six assists. Sophomore Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) and junior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Green and White, finishing with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Behind Huber's nine, Powers notched seven caroms, four of which were offensive, and led the team with four steals. Sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) recorded a career-high five blocks along with a steal. Bardic and sophomore Laura Malhum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) each finished with a trio of steals.

After Huber opened the contest with a three, Carroll marched down to score seven straight points. White found Powers for a triple to cut the lead to one at the 7:15 mark in the first.

With 3:29 remaining in the opening quarter, Palmer buried a dish from Mahlum to even the score at 13 all. Carroll regained control and recorded the next eight points, but Palmer cut the lead to six with a basket in the paint to end the first 10 minutes of action.

Two Huber baskets sandwiched a Palmer layup to bring the game to within two with 7:57 left to play in the first half. The rest of the quarter saw Carroll control its lead, as the Pios held a 46-26 at the halfway point.

Illinois Wesleyan would cut the lead to eight, but never found its groove in the second half, ultimately falling, 88-78.

The Titans await their postseason fate for the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be Monday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m. ET.
