Women’s Hoops Tops ETBU

IWU completes perfect non-conference schedule, moves to 12-0

SAN ANTONIO - The third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team completed a sweep of its Texas trip Saturday, Dec. 28, as the Titans (12-0) downed East Texas Baptist University, 66-57, at Calgaard Gymnasium.

Illinois Wesleyan used 24 ETBU (9-3) miscues and 17 offensive rebounds to overcome a slow shooting showing. The Green and White went 21-for 70 (30 percent) from the floor and just 4-for-18 from three-point distance. The Tigers connected on 20-of-57 attempts (35 percent) and 7-of-25 three-point tries. IWU went 20-of-28 at the free throw line, while ETBU converted 10-of-15.

Illinois Wesleyan held leads in bench scoring (12-9), points off turnovers (23-12), and fastbreak scoring (24-8). East Texas Baptist held the upperhand in rebounding, 42-36, as well as points in the paint (26-24) and second-chance scoring (14-10).

Senior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) led the Titans with 15 points, aided by four three-pointers, while adding five rebounds and tying for the team lead with four assists. Junior Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) added 14 points, six boards, and five steals, with senior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) posting 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Powers was IWU's source of offense over the first five minutes as she propelled the Titans to a 5-3 edge into the game's first media timeout.

With neither team shooting exceptionally well, Illinois Wesleyan used buckets by junior Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park), senior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East), and Bardic to maintain its lead before a Powers three pushed the Green and White ahead, 14-11, into the second.

Bardic proved to be the spark in the next quarter, as she went on a five-point spurt to grow the Titan lead, 19-12, with just over seven minutes to play in the half.

ETBU came out of a timeout with a 9-2 run to knot the score at 21 all, but Balli found Powers for a triple. The bucket, which pushed Powers into double digits, started an eight-point run over three minutes for IWU.

Coming out of halftime with a 29-23 lead, the Green and White opened up a double-digit advantage. The Tigers mounted a comeback late, but the Titans weathered the late push from the free throw line to earn the 66-57 win.

With the non-conference schedule complete, IWU will focus its attention on College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. The Titans travel to King Arena for a 5 p.m. bout with Wheaton College Saturday, Jan. 4.
