Women’s Soccer Downed by Big Blue in Season Finale

Titans finish the season 3-12-2 and 1-6-1 in CCIW play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team battled the Big Blue from Millikin University Wednesday night, Oct. 30 in what would ultimately be the Titans' final game of the 2024 season. IWU (3-12-2, 1-6-1 CCIW) scored the first goal of the match but could not carry the momentum into the second half as the Titans fell 2-1 to MU (13-3-1, 5-3-0 CCIW).

An evenly matched contest saw the Titans trail the Big Blue in shots (23-22) and corner kicks (4-3) but IWU held the advantage in saves (7-6). Freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) recorded all 90 minutes in goal, and her seven saves on the night brought her season saves total to 89 with a .774 save percentage.

IWU's strategic offense managed to draw the Big Blue keeper out of position many a time throughout the contest, creating 10 shot opportunities in the first half alone. Freshman Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) did just that in the 11th minute as she pulled the Millikin keeper out left before setting up junior captain Bree Cordray (Le Roy, Ill.-University High) for the shot but a Millikin defender stepped in for the block to keep the match scoreless.

IWU found its opportunity in the 18th minute as senior captain Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) did a reverse setup from the middle of the box out to the left side where Dahlquist was waiting to score her second goal of the season and put the Titans up 1-nil.

Millikin leveled the score in the 36th minute to send the game into halftime tied at 1-all.

IWU's defense held the Big Blue to just nine shots in the second half while freshman Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) and Cordray had two close-call shots that ricocheted off the crossbar as the Titans stayed scoreless through the second half.

Millikin took the lead in the 74th minute with a goal by Adrianna Gudaitis and would carry that 2-1 lead until the game's end.

Tonight's game concludes the 2024 season for Illinois Wesleyan. IWU is set to return 21 players for the 2025 season.
