Women’s Hoops Topples Augie in Annual Pink Zone Game

Five players score in double-figures

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The 11th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team overpowered Augustana College Saturday, Jan. 27, in its annual Pink Zone game inside the Shirk Center. The Titans (16-4, 9-2 CCIW) never trailed as the Green and White defeated Augie (11-9, 6-5 CCIW), 85-59, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin bout.

Five players scored in double figures to lead a balanced Illinois Wesleyan offense. Junior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) led IWU with 18 points, while also pulling in a team-best eight rebounds. Sophomore Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) scored 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) finished with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) tallied 11 points with five assists and four steals.

The Titans finished 31-for-71 from the floor, with seven three-pointers. IWU hit 16-of-21 free throws. The Vikings used a strong third quarter to finish with a field goal percentage of 43.4. Augie converted 7-of-25 three-point tires and 6-of-7 free throw attempts.

Illinois Wesleyan led in rebounding, 38-35, while also registering leads in points off turnovers (29-7), points in the paint (36-20), second chance scoring (11-7), and fastbreak scoring (26-4). IWU forced 27 turnovers and committed just 12 itself. The Green and White recorded 17 steals, with White's four pacing the team. Huber, Bardic, junior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy), and Mahlum added three apiece.

Bardic scored the first four points of the game, before back-to-back three-pointers from the top of the key from Mahlum opened up a 12-4 Titan lead at the media timeout.

Augustana used a three to pull within a bucket, but Illinois Wesleyan carried an 18-15 lead into the second quarter.

A three-ball by Palmer powered IWU ahead, 25-18, and forced an Augie timeout, but the pause did little to slow the Titans.

An and-one by Palmer stretched the lead to a dozen, before White swiped a pass near midcourt and took it herself for the layup. White's swipe and score with 3:28 to play was part of a 17-2 run by the Green and White. IWU closed the half with a pair of three-pointers to cap a 10-point run.

Leading 49-25 after 20 minutes of play, Illinois Wesleyan pushed its lead to as many as 28 in the second half.

Never relinquishing control, a senior-to-senior play finished off IWU's scoring. Senior Launi Chanthaboury (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) fed senior Emma Kornak (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) in the low post for a bucket to close out an 85-58 victory.

The Titans remain at home this week as Illinois Wesleyan hosts Wheaton College in a midweek CCIW battle Wednesday night, Jan. 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
