Titans Put Out Prairie Fire in Dominating Fashion

IWU heads to Waverly, Iowa for Midwest Tournament Sept. 9-10

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In its first game under the lights, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team notched a 4-0 shutout over the Knox College Prairie Fire Wednesday, Sept. 6, as freshman Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) delivered a pair of goals in back-to-back minutes. After two home games to start the season, the Titans hit the road for a weekend trip to Waverly, Iowa for the Midwest Tournament hosted by Wartburg College.

A scoreless first half saw the Titans control much of the possession as they led with 12 shots, six of which were on goal, to the Prairie Fire's two. The Green and White maintained their dominance through the second half with 29 shots while holding Knox to zero.

Freshman Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) got the Titans rolling in the 69th minute of play with a rebound goal to notch her first unassisted goal of the season.

Junior Amanda Yaeger (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way West) took advantage of a cross-field pass to split two Knox defenders and buried a goal in the bottom right corner of the net to put the Titans up 2-0 in the 72nd minute.

Mapes picked up back-to-back goals in the 79th and 80th minutes of play. Sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) set Mapes up to win a one-on-one battle for the newcomer's first goal of her collegiate career. Sophomore Maya Basan (Skokie, Ill.-Loyola Academy) launched a deep pass into the box for Mapes to connect for a header goal, securing the 4-0 win for the Titans.

Junior goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) moves to a 1-1 record after an uneventful night in the net. Borg faced two shots on the evening and added another save to her season total (8).
