Softball Sweeps Augie, Earns Top Seed in CCIW Tournament

Wissmiller homers three times over two games

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team claimed at least a share of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Regular Season Championship Saturday, May 6, with a sweep of Augustana College at Inspiration Field. The Titans walked off a 5-3 win in game one, before earning an 8-0 run-rule victory in game two. With the victories, IWU will serve as the host of next week's CCIW Tournament.

Game One: Augustana 3, Illinois Wesleyan 5
A two-run homer to left gave Augustana the early advantage through just one half inning. The Vikings had an opportunity to further their lead, but senior Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) stranded two with a groundout to third.

Trailing 3-0 through one and a half innings, junior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) dropped a high-skying double into right center to lead things off for IWU. Freshman Claire Post's (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) sac bunt moved Turner into third, but the Titans could not bring her home as a pair of strikeouts thwarted the threat.

Illinois Wesleyan stranded two more in the third, maintaining the 3-0 score into the fourth.

A ground ball with bases loaded saw the Titans plate their first run in the bottom of the fifth, before Post's bases loaded walk brought home junior Maya Black (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood). The two-run inning trimmed the Augie lead to one, 3-2, into the sixth.

After Mardjetko battled to strand a runner on third, the Green and White's half of the sixth started off with a bang. Freshman Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) sent the first pitch of the frame out to left, tying the game at 3-3.

A single by Post with one away put the winning run aboard with one away. A foul flyout had the Titans down to their last out with Wissmiller coming to the plate. Just as she did in her previous at bat, Wissmiller cranked a two-run walkoff homer up and out to give the Green and White a thrilling 5-3 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan finished the game with 12 hits with five Titans pick up multi-hit outings. Sophomore Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) went 3-for-4 atop the lineup, with Black going 2-for-4 and Moore finishing 2-for-3. Turner also went 2-for-4, while Wissmiller notched three RBIs in her 2-for-4 showing.

Mardjetko went the distance in the circle, striking out five over seven innings of work.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 8, Augustana 0 (5 inn.)
A relay from junior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) to Kuhn to Post at the plate kept Augustana from scoring the first and fired up the Titans dugout.

Turner doubled to leadoff the second and bolted for third on Post's sacrifice before swiping home. Wissmiller cranked a double to the left-center gap and came around to score on Fontanetta's single back up the middle. The RBI knock doubled IWU's lead, 2-0, into the third.

Illinois Wesleyan pounced for five runs in the third to take control, 7-0. The inning began with a Black leadoff walk and saw Khoury single to drive her home.Turner then singled to put two on, before Post singled to load the bases. Stepping to the plate was Wissmiller, who blasted a grand slam to left.

The fifth saw an RBI single from Post extend the lead to 8-0 with Augie down to its final at bats.

Senior Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) shut the door in the bottom of the fifth, ending the 8-0 run-rule win.

Illinois Wesleyan will now wait for the standings to finalize before learning of its first CCIW Tournament opponent. The tournament will get underway Thursday, May 11 with a noon first pitch between the No. 4 and No. 5 seed.
