Softball Falls to Millikin on Final Day of CCIW Tournament

Titans drop to 27-16 on the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team fell to Millikin University, 3-0, Saturday, May 13, on the final day of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament. The Titans, with a record of 27-16, will now have to await NCAA Tournament selections in hopes of an at-large bid. Meanwhile, the Big Blue (30-9) earned the CCIW's automatic bid.

Prior to today's championship, sophomore Kennady Estes (Warrenton, Mo.-Warrenton) was recognized as the co-recipient of the CCIW Elite 26 Award presented to the student-athlete at the championship with the highest GPA.

A squeeze after a triple brought home the game's first run of the day as Millikin claimed a 1-0 lead through two innings.

Two great defensive plays kept the Big Blue from adding to the lead in the bottom of the third as junior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) chased down a mile-high fly ball in foul territory. Freshman Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) then threw out a runner trying to steal to end the threat.

Millikin upped its lead to 3-0 in the fifth, using a two-run homer to left-center to do so.

The Titans were doubled up in hits, 6-3, with three different players producing a hit. Senior Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) and junior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) each went 1-for-3, while freshman Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) finished 1-for-2.

Freshman Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) started the game and struck out one over five innings, while scattering six hits and allowing three runs. Senior Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) tossed a 1-2-3 sixth in relief.

The NCAA Division III softball selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 15, at 1 p.m. ET and will be live streamed via NCAA.com.
