Baseball Staves Off Elimination with Victory over Carroll

Third round action set for tomorrow at either 11 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.

MOLINE, Ill. - Needing a win to extend its season, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took down Carroll University by the final score of 11-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, Thursday, May 11. The Titans welcomed four runs in the fourth and the seventh to run past the Pios and to stay alive in postseason action.

With the win, the Green and White's record upped to 19-22, while CU's season came to an end with a record of 16-23.

The Pios scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to create a 2-0 advantage after a half inning of play, but their lead did not last long.

Senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) tagged his third home run of the season on the first pitch he saw to get the Titans on the board and trim the deficit in half, 2-1.

After surrendering a leadoff triple in the second, freshman Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) struck out the next three CU hitters that he faced to keep the score at 2-1.

IWU tied the contest in the bottom of the second to knot the score at two. Junior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) led off the frame with a single and later advanced to second on a Pio wild pitch. Continuing his outstanding tournament, junior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) singled up the middle, as Hutson went to third. Junior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) secured the Titans fifth hit of the game to push Hutson across the plate.

The Pios pushed across a two-out run in the top of the third to retake the lead, 3-2.

The Green and White scored four in the fourth to open up a 6-3 lead. Three straight walks from Hutson, sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence), and Biggers loaded the bases for IWU in the fourth. After an impressive at bat, Ping placed a single that dropped in front of the right fielder to tie the game at three. A walk from Perona sent another run in to give Illinois Wesleyan the 4-3 advantage.

Still in the fourth, sophomore Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) produced another run on a sacrifice fly. Junior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) notched an RBI groundout to expand the lead to 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, senior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) brought in another insurance run on an RBI groundout to push IWU's cushion to 7-3.

The IWU bullpen fired two perfect frames to cement the 11-3 victory.

The Titans outhit the Pios by a final tally of 15-6.

Illinois Wesleyan scored four runs in the seventh to widen the advantage to 11-3. Perona led the offensive outpouring with his 4-for-4 day, as he has yet to be retired in the conference tournament. Cyrus sprinkled in a 3-for-5 game, while Ping, Hutson, and Biggers had a pair of hits. A trio of Titans notched two RBI each.

Pullam tossed seven innings on the bump, allowed six hits, and was credited with the victory (3-1). The Palatine, Ill. native struck out seven and did not surrender a walk. The righty was tagged for three runs.

Depending on how many teams remain after today's other two contests, the Titans will either play the loser of North Central College and Millikin University tomorrow at 11 a.m., or the winner of Augustana College and North Park University tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. If game times are adjusted due to the predicted weather, updates will be made to iwusports.com.
