Softball Splits at UW-Whitewater

Khoury, Moore, & Post homer in game two win

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Taking a break from league play, the Illinois Wesleyan University softball split a doubleheader at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Sunday, April 23. After being shutout 4-0 in game one, the Titans (18-11) returned the favor, blanking the Warhawks (20-6), 7-0, in the nightcap.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 0, UW-Whitewater 4
The Green and White's bats were stymied in game one of the doubleheader, mustering just four hits over seven innings as its win streak was halted at 13. Sophomore Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) was the highlight, going 2-for-3 at the plate, but IWU could not string hits together in a 4-0 loss.

Senior Nina Mardjeko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) tossed six innings, striking out four and walking one. She scattered nine hits and was tagged for four runs, two of which were earned.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 7, UW-Whitewater 0
The Titan offense woke in a rage in game two, tagging the Warhawks pitching staff for three homers. Sophomore Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) followed a Kuhn single with her 10th homer of the season to put IWU up, 2-0, in the first.

Junior Priscilla Peek (Deer Creek, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) rocketed a two-run single to center in the third, doubling Illinois Wesleyan's advantage to 4-0.

A solo round-tripper from senior Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) and a two-run shot by freshman Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) upped the lead to 7-0 into the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) worked around four hits from there to preserve the shutout. The senior hurler finished with eight strikeouts in a six-hit shutout to earn her seventh win of the season.

Offensively, IWU finished with nine hits spread among six Titans. Moore and Post each finished 2-for-4 with a homer and a run scored, while Peek went 2-for-3. Peek tied Khoury and Post for the team-lead with two RBIs.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to conference play later this week, as IWU is slated to play six games in four days. The crucial College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin run begins Thursday, April 27, with a twin bill against North Central College at Inspiration Field.
