Softball Uses Small Ball to Seal Win Over Wartburg

Khoury clubs fifth homer of the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team secured a 7-2 win over Wartburg College in its home opener Saturday, April 1, in the first game of its annual home tournament at Inspiration Field. The Titans improved to 7-10 with the win, while the Knights fell to 8-10.

The Green and White finished with seven hits to Wartburg's six, while IWU's offensive outburst was also aided by four errors. Sophomores Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) and Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Khoury blasting a homer. Kuhn, junior Priscilla Peek (Deer Creek, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame), and freshman Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) each whacked doubles in the win.

In the circle, senior Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) tossed a complete game. She allowed six hits over seven innings and struck out seven to improve to 5-5 on the season.

Khoury got the Titans rolling with a solo homer to straight-away center, her fifth round-tripper of the season, to break the scoreless tie in the fourth.

Peek's leadoff double sparked the Titans in the fifth, as she came around to score on junior Bailey Turner's (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) sacrifice bunt. The small-ball play saw an errant throw allow Peek to score from second and Turner end up on third safely. IWU tacked on another run, once again turning to the bunt, as senior Madison Moore's (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) squeeze brought Turner home safely.

Mardjetko worked around a leadoff bunt-single to send the game to the bottom of the sixth with IWU in front, 3-0, where IWU erupted for four runs. Junior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) reached on an error, with Khoury following with a single to left. With two on, Kuhn singled through the left side to load the bases and bring about a Wartburg pitching change.

With the bases loaded, freshman Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) put a ball in play that saw another errant throw lead to two Titan runs as Fontanetta and pinch runner Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) scampered home. Peek then put down the squeeze, scoring Kuhn, before Turner capped the scoring with an RBI single to left.

Wartburg broke the shutout in the seventh, scoring two on a single to right. Mardjetko bounced back though, ending the game with a fly out to center.

Illinois Wesleyan continues its home tournament tomorrow, April 2, with a 9 a.m. game against the University of Wisconsin-Stout. IWU then tangles with the Tigers of DePauw University at 3:45 p.m.
