Baseball Clipped by Eastern Illinois

CCIW opener set for Saturday

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team traveled to face Division I Eastern Illinois University for a single game, Wednesday, March 29. The Titans dropped the contest by a final score of 24-7. With the setback, IWU's record now stands at 4-12, while EIU's record upped to 14-7.

In the top of the second, IWU recorded three straight hits to begin the frame as senior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect), sophomore Casey Swanson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka), and sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) produced two singles and a double. Gurgone's two-bagger allowed Burgh to scamper home to crack the scoreboard. Junior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and sophomore Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) both knocked in a run as the Green and White tallied three runs on three hits.

The Titans scored four runs in the fifth, which was highlighted by a two RBI triple off the bat of senior Blake Niebrugge (Watson, Ill.-Effingham St. Anthony). A Panther error allowed Niebrugge to cross the plate later in the frame. IWU claimed their final run of the contest on Tomhave's second RBI, as Swanson scored.

Eastern Illinois outhit IWU by a final tally of 18-9. Junior Aaron Miranda (Davie, Fla.-Fort Lauderdale) led the offense with his 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate. Seven other Titans recorded a hit, while Niebrugge and Tomhave each recorded a pair of RBI.

On the bump, seven hurlers recorded action to cover the six innings of work.

The Green and White will turn to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, Saturday, April 1. IWU will make the trip to Chicago to begin a three-game series with North Park University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two beginning a half hour after game one. The series will conclude with a home contest, Sunday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
