Doubles Sweep Propels Women’s Tennis to Victory over Alverno

Titans pick up first win of season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Powered by a sweep at the doubles portion of the match, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season Sunday, March 26, as the Titans (1-13) took down Alverno College, 8-1. 

The match saw junior Macy Michorczyk (Franklin Park, Ill.-West Leyden), sophomore Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township), and freshman Marianna Arias (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) pick up their first collegiate victory. 

The freshman duo of Kate Christian (Washington, Ill.-Washington Community) and Raji More (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) took an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Michorczyk paired up with sophomore Andie Wilson (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) at No. 2 doubles to help close out the doubles sweep, as the duo won 8-7, using a 7-5 tiebreaker to secure the win. Matimore and Arias opened the match with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

In the individual portion of the event, Christian picked up a victory in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-0, while More took a 6-1, 6-3, win at No. 2 singles. At No. 4 singles, Wilson used set wins of 6-1, 6-1, to pick up her second win of the match. Matimore won at No. 5 singles, while Arias was victorious at No. 6 singles, both winning their sets 6-0, 6-0. 

IWU returns to action at Greenville University Saturday, April 1. The Titans will face the Illinois Institute of Technology at 2 p.m. before facing Greenville at 5 p.m. Results will be posted on iwusports.com upon the completion of the match.
