Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Dominates Thunder on the Road

Palmer and Powers combine for 34 points

WHEATON, Ill. - The No. 24 Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team rode a huge second quarter to a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory on Wednesday night, Dec. 6, against Wheaton College on the road, 74-49. The Titans move to 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in CCIW play, while Wheaton falls to 6-2 and 1-2 in conference play.

Junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) led the Titans in scoring with 18, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Fellow junior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) was not far behind with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) finished with 12 points. Sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) led the team in steals and assists with six apiece.

The Titans used 26 Wheaton miscues to convert 30 points off of turnovers. IWU also bested the Thunder in fastbreak points, 19-2, and bench points, 22-11. The Thunder outrebounded the Titans 33-29.

The Green and White got down early, trailing 14-7 halfway through the first quarter. With around four minutes remaining in the period, a Power's three from White ended a 7-0 Wheaton run, and sparked the Titan offense. With that bucket, IWU would hold the Thunder to just three points for almost eight minutes, going on a 19-3 run.

That run would end with about seven minutes remaining in the second quarter, but the Titans outscored the Thunder 23-13 in the second quarter and never lost their lead. Balli ended the half with five unanswered points to take a 42-30 lead heading into halftime.

The red hot Titan offense would not end in the first half, as a three from Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington), back to back buckets by Powers, and a Palmer three ball started the second half on a 10-0 Titan run, opening up a 52-30 lead. A three from Powers to end the third quarter gave the Titans a 60-37 advantage heading into the final period.

With the game well in hand, the Green and White saw buckets from Megan Moody (Gibson City, Ill.-Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley) and Anna Beyers (Pana, Ill.-Pana) to put a bow on a Titan victory.

The Titans continue their road trip this Saturday, Dec. 9, in Naperville, Ill. for a date with North Central College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will serve as the front half of a doubleheader with IWU's men's squad.
