Women’s Volleyball Rolls to Eighth Straight Win with Sweep of Gorloks

Titans improve to 15-12 on the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team needed just 75 minutes to sweep Webster University in a non-conference bout Wednesday night, Nov. 1, using set scores of 25-11, 25-8, 25-21 to do so. With the win, the Titans (15-12) extend their win streak to eight.

Illinois Wesleyan saw all 16 players dressed make an appearance in the match, as the offense combined for a scorching .312 attack percentage, while holding the Gorloks (15-13) to an even .000 clip. IWU saw commanding advantages in kills (43-17), assists (37-15), digs (52-35), and aces (10-3), while Webster recorded four blocks to the Green and White's two.

One day removed from winning American Volleyball Coaches Association/GameChanger National Player of the Week, sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) continued her sensational season with 16 kills on a .406 attack percentage. Senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) put on an impressive offensive show, finishing with nine kills on a monstrous .474 clip. Freshman Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) and senior Annika Altekruse (Naperville, Ill.-Metea Valley) each added four kills.

Senior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) orchestrated the majority of the offense, finishing with 20 assists. Junior Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) and sophomore Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee) recorded six and four, respectively. French led the match with three aces, while Pierce, Gund, and freshman Olivia deGuzman (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Divine Savior Holy Angels) all added a pair.

Defensively, deGuzman led the team with 12 digs, while French accumulated 11 to notch her 19th double-double performance of the season. Summers and sophomore Halle Smith (Farina, Ill.-South Central) each finished with six.

French opened the match with a kill, as she utilized a Pierce assist to do so. After a Titans miscue, Palmer opened an 8-1 run with a kill, while Pierce found French and Harrington for back-to-back kills before Webster to record a sideout. IWU responded quickly, as French notched her third kill of the night, and Summers posted two straight kills. Palmer finished the run with another kill, forcing the Gorloks to burn their first timeout of the set.

Coming out of the timeout, Webster halted the Titans' run, but Summers got a quick sideout for the Green and White, followed by a Babec kill to up the score to 10-3. The Gorloks rang in back-to-back points to bring the score to within five, but IWU took the next four points, taking a 14-5 lead, as Webster used its final timeout of the set. Illinois Wesleyan cruised the rest of the way, opening the match with a commanding, 25-11, first set win.

Webster registered the first two points of the second set, but a French kill got a sideout for the home team. With the score tied at three apiece, Pierce found Palmer for a kill, kickstarting four straight points for the Titans. Illinois Wesleyan never fell out of rhythm, cruising to 25-8 win, powered by a .435 attack percentage for the team.

The third set saw back-and-forth action until IWU rattled off six straight points to take an 18-11 advantage. The run saw three kills from French, along with a kill from Summers and Altekruse each. With the set at 23-15, Webster mounted a rally, using a 6-1 run to bring the score to within three, but freshman Paige Peterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) etched the win in the books, as she registered her third kill of the night to secure the 25-21 third set victory, completing the sweep.

Illinois Wesleyan stays at home, as IWU will host Aurora University Saturday, Nov. 4. The match will serve as senior night for the Titans, who will honor their six seniors prior to the 1 p.m. start.
