Miller’s PK Advances Titans to CCIW Tournament Semifinals

Titans to face No. 2 seeded Wheaton Wednesday

CHICAGO - A clutch save from sophomore Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) set the table for senior Ryan Miller's (Shingle Springs, Calif.-Oak Ridge) penalty kick in the eighth round to send the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer past North Park University in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament quarterfinals Saturday evening, Oct. 28. The Titans (5-6-4) advance to the CCIW Tournament semifinal to play No. 2 seed Wheaton College Wednesday night, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.

North Park jumped on the board first, tapping in a goal off a cross in the 14th minute, and held the 1-nil lead into the match's final five minutes of regulation.

Pressing for the equalizer, the Titans broke through in the 86th minute as senior Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) flicked a ball on to fellow senior CJ Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, Calif.-Dos Pueblos), who headed in his second goal of the year, to level the score.

In the first overtime period, IWU grabbed its first lead of the night on senior Brody Seaton's (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) third goal of the year. Taking advantage of a free kick opportunity, Seaton ripped a high-pace shot into the back of the net to push Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 2-1.

North Park battled back though, tying the game at 2-2 in the 109th minute, to send the match to penalties.

Tylnny, Seaton, and Rodriguez all converted their PKs out of the gate, as the match went into the fifth round with NPU up, 4-3. Kedzior stood tall on the Vikings' next attempt, making the save to keep the TItans' hopes alive.

Freshman Faheem Mujahid (Saint Robert, Mo.-Waynesville), sophomore Kalabi Kamau (Alpharetta, Ga.-Marist School), and junior Eli Warren (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet-Seymour) each followed with PK conversions as things rolled into the eighth round. There, Kedzior came up with a massive save before Miller tucked a fast-paced shot into the back of the net.

Illinois Wesleyan, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, will make its first CCIW Tournament semifinal appearance since 2019. The Titans will travel to Wheaton, Ill. Wednesday, Nov. 1, for a midweek CCIW Tournament semifinal showdown against the Thunder. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
