Football’s Slow Start Leads to Setback Against Augustana

Scott returns kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University football team could not dig itself out of an early hole Saturday, Oct. 28, as the Titans fell to Augustana College, 44-14, at Tucci Stadium. IWU's record now stands at 2-6 overall and 2-5 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while Augie bolstered its record to 7-1 (6-1 CCIW).

Junior Jay Lemenager (Clifton, Ill.-Clifton) completed 12-of-24 passes for 133 yards with a touchdown toss to Trevon Moore (Cool Valley, Mo.-Ritenour). Senior Matt Young (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) led the Titans with five catches for 58 yards, both of which were team-highs.

Illinois Wesleyan saw senior Arthur Chatt (La Grange, Ill.-Lyons Township), junior Sam Schott (West Lafayette, Ind.-West Lafayette), and sophomore Shea Gaffney (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Glenbard North) post double-digit tackles. Chatt led the Titans with 16, including 1.5 for loss, while Schott and Gaffney notched a dozen apiece. Schott also added a sack, 1.5 TFLs, and a pass breakup. Junior Zach McNees (Hillsboro, Mo.-Hillsboro) finished with five stops, a team-best two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hurry.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with 172 yards of total offense, a majority of which came through the air (149 yards), while Augustana totaled 539 yards overall. The Vikings threw for 281 yards and rushed for 258.

Augustana scored on each of its first five possessions to take control, 31-0. IWU broke the shutout with a nine-play, 74-yard drive. After a Viking penalty gave the Titans a fresh set of downs, Lemenager connected with Young on 22-yard and 10-yard pickups to put Illinois Wesleyan on the verge of the red zone. After Lemenager's eight-yard completion to junior Myles Kee (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory), Moore hauled in a pass from the southpaw for an 18-yard touchdown reception.

The 31-7 deficit stood well into the third quarter before Augustana bulldozed it in from the IWU one-yard line. On the ensuing kickoff, junior Jahari Scott (Lake Forest, Ill.-Lake Forest) sped down the Titan sideline for a 92-yard touchdown. The big special teams play cut Augie's lead to 37-14 with just under two minutes remaining in the period, but the Vikings scored once more in the fourth to defeat the Titans, 44-14.

Illinois Wesleyan travels to Naperville, Ill. Saturday, Oct. 28, to take on No. 1 ranked North Central College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
