Women’s Hoops Tripped Up at North Park

Titans record drops to 7-7, 2-3 in CCIW

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team dropped a seesaw battle, 63-58, at North Park University Wednesday night, Jan. 4, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. The Titans now sit at 7-7 on the season and 2-3 in the CCIW, while the Vikings upped their record to 6-7 (2-2 CCIW).

Senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard North) scored 22 points with five rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) added a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. Sophomore Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) tacked on 13 points, including a pair of triples, while fellow sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) added nine points.

Illinois Wesleyan posted a field goal percentage of 37.5 (24-for-64), going 3-for-16 from distance. The Titans connected on just 7-of-16 free throw attempts. Meanwhile, North Park knocked down 26-of-63 shot attempts (41.3 percent). The Vikings struggled from beyond the arc, finishing 3-for-19, but went 8-for-12 at the charity stripe.

NPU held a 43-40 rebounding advantage and a 9-6 edge in second chance points. IWU turned the ball over 16 times to 14 miscues by the Vikings, as North Park mounted a 15-13 lead in points off turnovers. The home team also led in bench points (9-2), points in the paint (40-28), and fastbreak points (8-4).

With the score tied at 38 midway through the third quarter, Palmer converted a fastbreak layup and Powers drilled a three to push IWU ahead, 43-38. The Vikings responded with a 5-0 run to even the score, but Heller hit a pull-up jumper from the elbow to reclaim a 45-43 edge.

Clinging to a one-point lead into the fourth, IWU's offense stalled as NPU scored the period's first six points. Trailing 49-43, a Huber free throw kickstarted a run by the Green and White. Palmer connected on a pull-up jumper from the baseline, capitalizing on a NPU turnover, and Heller added a layup to inch Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 50-49. A series of offensive rebounds by the Titans eventually led to another layup by Heller, moving IWU ahead by three, 52-49, with five minutes to play.

North Park found some momentum out of a timeout, using a pull-up jumper and layup to reclaim the lead, 53-52.

A clutch putback by Huber gave IWU a 54-53 advantage with 2:48 to go, but it proved to be the Green and White's last lead of the night.

NPU converted a three-pointer from the top of the key with two minutes left, breaking a 54-54 tie. The Vikings held on from there, downing the Titans, 63-58.

Illinois Wesleyan remains on the road Saturday, Jan. 7, with a trip to Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. for a bout with Carthage College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will serve as the front end of a doubleheader with the IWU men's basketball team.
