Women’s Hoops Falls to Augie in Close Contest

Titans return to action Wed., Feb. 1, at Elmhurst

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Behind a 30-point performance from sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenwood East), the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell in a nail biter to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Augustana College, Saturday evening, Jan. 28. AC escaped with a 75-72 victory at Carver PE Center. With the setback, the Green and White's record sits at 11-9 (6-5 CCIW), while the Vikings' record climbs to 13-7 (7-4 CCIW).

Huber led all scorers with her near career-high of 30, while also adding nine rebounds. Sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) dropped 12, while junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) and senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) tallied nine and six points, respectively.

Freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) set a career-high with nine assists in the defeat.

Illinois Wesleyan shot 28-58 from the field (48.3%), while AC shot 28-56 (50%). IWU took 21 three's and converted on eight, good for 38.1% beyond the arc. In comparison, the Vikings attempted 30 from long range and sank nine (30%). Both squads made the most of their charity stripe appearances, as IWU assembled an 8-for-9 effort (88.8%), while Augustana went 10-for-12 (83.3%). AC's outscored the Green and White's by a 26-15 tally.

In the opening frame, Palmer drained a three-ball, off of a Huber assist, to snag the quick, 5-2 lead. The Vikings evened the score at seven-all with 5:33 to play. Just 10 seconds after the AC equalizer, Knutson sank a mid-range jumper as the Green and White re-took the 9-7 advantage. A defensive battle ensued as neither team scored for two minutes of action.

After an IWU steal, Huber cleaned up the play with a tip-in layup to push the lead to 11-7 as the clock stood at 2:54. At the end of the first, the Titans enjoyed a 14-9 advantage as Huber drained another deep ball.

The Vikings used the break to regroup as the home team stormed back to tally five points in the first 40 seconds of the second quarter to knot the score at 14-14. Back and forth action ensued for the majority of the frame.

With 3:15 left until halftime, the game was tied, 26-26. AC converted on back-to-back possessions to take a slim lead. A Palmer three pointer cut the deficit to 30-29. The field goal warranted a timeout from the Augustana bench with 2:00 minutes to go. Heading into the intermission period, the home team held a 35-34 advantage.

Coming out of the break, the Vikings maintained a slim lead for the first part of the third frame. A freshman Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) three gave the visitors a two-point, 45-43, lead with 5:43 remaining. AC welcomed a four point advantage after a three of their own with 3:18 to play. Huber continued her scorching offensive evening with a stepback jumper to cut the deficit to 53-51. After three quarters of action, Augustana held a 57-53 advantage.

Freshman Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) provided a spark off the bench by scoring five straight points to give IWU a 58-57 lead. However, AC would take a 61-58 cushion with 7:43 left and would never let the Titans take the lead.

Illinois Wesleyan managed to cut the deficit to 74-72 with 11 ticks left on a Huber layup. The Titans were unable to complete the comeback as AC took the 75-72 victory.

The Green and White will remain on the road for the team's next competition, Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Titans are set to travel to Elmhurst University for a mid-week matchup with the BlueJays. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside of R.A. Faganel Hall.
